Re: Recommended affordable 0.4 micron filter brands?
Can’t go wrong with a sawyer squeeze. Meets all the specs for the island and is budget friendly. Easy to use too! Just don’t let it freeze.

Re: rerouting of Feldtmann Loop trail N of Siskiwit Bay
Wow! I feel special! Thanks for writing all that up to answer my question. The map helps me visualize this much better. I literally CAN NOT wait to be back on the island. I’ll be sure to report back my experiences!!!

Re: TR (5/31-6/7, 2021): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting
The recommended route cuts inland briefly to make use of the obsolete trail’s non-obsolete bridge over the Siskiwit River. This was easy. The next place the recommended route parts ways with the beach is Senter Point, which you’re supposed to bushwhack across before resuming beachwhacking on the ot...

Gotta go with Moskey on this one. Some of the best there.

Re: IR first timer: trail and camping recommendations?
I like the route listed above and would echo that as a recommendation for a first timer. Definitely do a shakedown pre trip. Full list … well that’s a personal decision. Your pack might look very different from mine. That said this is what we pack as a couple for the island: https://youtu.be/MizKOOm...

Re: Goshawks nesting on the Greenstone
The nesting period for Goshawks is quite a long time too so plan on them being there if you travel this route. haha. Silly birds are super aggressive at protecting their nests.

It does have more than a blade but the other (only 2) things are useful too. Esp the scissors (cut qui...

Re: Inland fishing for backpackers?
I have that debate everytime I go. Last time I decided we wouldn't have enough "fishable" locations to justify it, and the whole time I was wishing I had it. That said, I am glad I didnt have to carry it! haha.

Re: CPAP Machine
One question is how wise it would be for someone who needs CPAP to go much further afield than Rock Harbor or Windigo. There are obviously lodging options with electricity at both sites. Not everyone with a cpap has debilitating issues. My mom uses one and is healthy outside of it. Her hiking abili...

Don’t need the baskets. Go with carbide or rubber tips. Either is fine. The island is a lot of rock.

Re: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste
I asked Tricia about teeth brushing, toothpaste ect. She is a Dental Hygienist. She said if one were to brush adequitely, water is all that is needed. Most people don't brush adequitely. Baking soda is a good product to use for brushing. Most people, when using toothpaste, use way to much. A little...

Re: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste
I did it for 9 days once. Wasn’t so bad!! Haha. Seriously though, don’t use soap (of any kind!!) in/near the waterways. If you must wash, do it a long ways away from the water. We typically carry a collapsible bucket (sea to summit) and that works well for hauling lots of water back to camp for hand...
