Re: Running Rock Harbor to Windigo - In ONE day

I know of 2 college gals who were not exceptionally experienced hikers that did it. Don't think they ran. From what I remember (this was 30 years ago) bring a good flashlight--I think they got in after midnight. They certainly got a great sense of accomplishment from it. My biggest concern would be ...

Any pics or TR??
This last May to celebrate 25 years. My wife trumped my I.R. trip idea :) Never did put up a trip report, but here's some pics.

Re: 2009 Trips

We are talking about a couple of options for our winter trip. The trip we have done in the past, 'shoe/ski into Little Beaver Lake and base out of there. Do a trip from Beaver Lake Road to the Lakeshore Trail back to Munising, 3 or 4 nights. Do the Lakeshore Trail from Grand Marais to Munising abou...

Re: 2009 Trips

I'm HOPING to finally get back this summer (dang, it's been since 2005). There's supposed to be be a family reunion in N. Wis. so the plan is to piggy-back an I.R. trip. Hopefully I can get the 2+ weeks I'll need off work. It's unlikely my wife can get that much time off, but one of daughters will b...

Re: First-timer planning for next summer

Hey hirkeukvic, Welcome to the forum! I'm a paddler, not a backpacker, but others will help you out any way they can. I can speak to the cost though. A few years ago a group of 5 us did a 6 day canoe trip and I found the spreadsheet I used to keep track of costs--total cost was $313.55 per person. T...

Re: Paddling Inner Lakes, Sep. 10-16

The regulation is here: http://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/canoe-and-kayak.htm "The use of wheeled portage devices is prohibited." BTW, I got an email from Ken asking about this, forwarded by the web board site. Fonix, how do we respond to those, since they don't have the senders email ...

They're not allowed on the island, so it's a moot point.

Re: Kari and Wally trip report

There was a bicycle on the boat on one of my trips. The guy was biking across the country and taking a "short cut" across Superior. And he wanted to see I.R. He was just overnighting at R.H. and leaving the next day on another boat. Since there's no wheeled vehicles allowed, they immediate...

Re: Private property on IR?

The Isle Royale Families and Friends Association has a site that may be of interest:
http://www.isleroyalefamilies.org/index.htm
The "About Us" page provides some history and perspective from families that owned land prior to becoming a national park.

Nick, was the overexposed lake effect intentional, or did it just come out that way? I love it!

Haven't backpacked, but did a family I.R. canoe trip with 2 teenage daughters. They loved it! Sounds like you're doing the right things to prepare the kids. We had 1 particularly difficult portage--I basically made it out to be hell on earth--you'll be dead tired, want to die, but you can do it, etc...

've seen a black fox out there...that was about all the exciting mammals I've seen besides your normal moose and squirrels. I met a silver fox on the trail to Scollville Pt. once. It came down the trail straight at me. I stopped. It stayed on the trail to within 3ft, swerved around me, and kept on ...

Funny you ask because I'm getting ready to buy a new one too. I have a Lumix (Panasonic) FZ5, but it had a little accident some time ago and doesn't always focus well. I'm going to replace it with a Lumix FZ8 with a similar 12x zoom, but there's also the FZ18 with an 18x -- something like a 28mm to ...

OK, I'll admit up front that I'm an old curmudgeon. That said, one of the reasons many of us go to IR is to escape some of the realities of life. I've been in campsites where I've had to listen to someone on a satellite phone discussing things that could well have been left to the user's return. I ...

Mammal List

http://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/brochures.htm

6 of the 18 mammals on I.R. are bats! Anyone ever see a marten, weasel, or mink?
Also interesting that the last caribou sighting was 1981. I was there for the summer of '79 and don't remember ever hearing of caribou on the island then.
