Re: Can you please review our itinerary?
Greetings Deeman. I'll add my thoughts about hiking boots: I've considered converting to trail runners even though the weight savings would be minimal over my vasques. However, Isle Royale isn't in my opinion, suitable for trail runners; given the mostly treacherous terrain, I'd want the over the an...

Re: Itinerary Advice [Windigo to Rock Harbor]
Adding a few thoughts here: McCargo - Moskey is a nice hike imo; true, hike up to greenstone from Chickenbone is brutal, but short. Flying: have flexibility planned into your trip; I flew there in August and was lucky... Fog ruled the week and plane wasn't able to land between my arrival and departu...

Re: New To Forum - First Question
The only things I'll chime in on: I'd take the Queen over the Ranger for the time issue and I agree with Tom; Lane Cove is easily reachable on day one...the hike back out really gets the heart pumping first thing.

Re: Itinerary Suggestions
In reference to fuel availability; when I went to the island via plane, I left my extra fuel canister with the ranger before flying back to the mainland. She explained they keep them for visitors who fly in after the store closes for the season. So check with the Rangers to verify this. Alternativel...

Great report. It very well may turn out that a few years from now, your nephews will look back on this as one of the best adventures they've had.

Re: 1st timer Itinerary
Isle Royale is worth the effort for sure...but it's not a cakewalk imho. Having done Lane Cove to Moskey -reverse of your itinerary- I can say it's a long day. Enjoy your trip.

Re: Freeze Dried portion sizes
As stated in previous posts, serving size vs needed calories don't mesh...if you had side dishes maybe. I like to share one and then have a second dinner by sharing another one a little while later.

Re: Hammocks Inside of Shelters
The shelters I've stayed at were not conducive to hanging...trust me, I would have preferred hanging vs sleeping on the floor.

Re: Feedback on itinerary
Thanks on that. We were figuring on taking advantage of any daylight we had on our first day. Also figuring on taking the Tobin trail to start, hearing that it is less rugged. We have shake down week end trips planned from April thru July where we hope to fine tune pack weight, get "used"...

Re: Feedback on itinerary
What time does your ferry arrive in RH? I know the Queen from Copper Harbor arrives around noon meaning your trail time will start around 1. Day one looks to be your longest day because of possible late start and heaviest pack weights. Looks to be doable, but I'd keep a close eye on the novice membe...

Re: Trip plan
How long will you be on the Isle? I'm sure your research will give you lots of ideas. Given the rugged terrain on Isle Royale, most people here will caution you to keep your miles down, and truly the experience is much more rewarding if you take your time hiking between camps. For Ideas, I'll give y...
