Re: Thoughts on a Labor Day-ish Trip?
Two of my trips have been over the Labor Day weekend.
Visitor numbers drop significantly. Weather has been nice.
It's also the start of Gale Season, be prepared.

Re: A taboo topic?
If I recall correctly, there is a marked grave along the trail from the Edison Fishery to the Rock Harbor light.
There is also a small cemetery plot on Cemetery Island.

Re: 3yr old hiking?
Allow me to offer a bit of a reality check, if you will. Isle Royale is a wilderness park. It isn't the NCT, and you won't be heading back to the car at the end of the day. Obviously, I don't know your son's temperament but if he decides to have a meltdown, you aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I'...

Re: Obnoxious boaters
Thank you, drobarge.
The perception that boaters "take over" docks irks me a bit. The docks are for BOATS. They are our only option for access to the island(s).

Re: Hay Bay
Hay Bay is popular with boaters, particularly those that come to the island to fish (fishing is good on the SW end of the island). So it's likely you'll find it in use. I spent a night there. It was okay. There is a large tent area; no shelters. There is a pit toilet and a picnic table. I think four...

Re: Grand Portage Marina
Correct. The marina down the hill from the Trading Post and RV Campground is for boaters; we usually capture and enslave any hikers that venture down there...philranger wrote:You want to continue north past the Casino to the Hat Marina. There you will find the VII and the Sea Hunter.

Re: Obnoxious boaters
Im Just askin, do boaters have to register with the park service at all while they visit the park? Yes, we have to file itineraries and pay the same fees that you do. Every time I've been to the island, I've been checked at least once, so someone might just show up, but they'll likely be caught if ...

Re: Obnoxious boaters
I hate to read things like this. I really do. As a boater, I have two problems here: I don't want to be lumped in with a minority that behaves badly because I don't, and I also don't like the attitude that boaters should not be welcome in the park, which seems to creep in discussions like this. I ha...

Re: I am a Canoob, QUICK QUESTION!
This is why paddlers should carry a marine VHF radio. You can hail the rangers right there rather than reporting it after the fact.
He'll likely do that again unless they caught up with him.
