Re: Border Issues
Since you are a foreign national, lawfully admitted to the US, there will be no need to "check-in" with respect to your immigration status once you are on Isle Royale because you've never left Michigan and are not returning from travel outside the US. It would be the same if you traveled f...

Re: Hidden Lake to Rock Harbor on foot
For what it's worth...I hiked out to 3 mile and base camped. I did the 3 Mile to Hidden Lake as a day hike. I suppose it was a bit redundant, but I had a nice lunch at Hidden Lake and the trail, for the most part was flat and easy.

Re: Border Issues
It should not be an issue, but it might be wise to bring your passport/visa along. I've never heard of any of the vessels or aircraft being diverted to Canada, although I suppose there might be a very remote possibility that you could be airlifted to Thunder Bay by the Canadian Coast Guard. Isle Roy...

Another Reason to Always Wear a PFD
DELHI TWP. (MI) – The search for a missing 28-year-old man continues today in the Grand River in the area of Waverly Road and Burke Highway. Crews from Ingham County Sheriff’s Office and Delhi Township Fire Department are searching the river’s shoreline by boat from the area where the man fell in to...

Re: dehyrated dinner gone bad
I don't generally use freeze dried foods since I got on a dehydrator kick a couple of years ago. But, I've found that many, especially those with meat, need to be simmered for a while even though they say they are fine rehydrating in the bag.

Re: Best $ for 3 guys at Grand Portage Casino?
I usually stay at The Outpost in Grand Marias. Then, I have a light breakfast (fruit, yogurt) in case the ride over is rough. Also, dinner at the Angry Trout the night before has become a tradition. Also, there is an outfitter there for those last minute purchases. Outpost is clean, knotty pined roo...

Re: Food storage in kayaks?
I pack my meals individually in Zip-Lock bags and store them in the ends of the boat. They pack really well into those small nooks and crannies. I'll usually leave them there and take them out as needed. Since I have fiberglass hatch covers (Impex Serenity boat), I've never had critter problems.

I use "The Original Bug Shirt." It's pricey, but it keeps them out.

Re: Kayak portage yoke experience or suggestions?
I've got the aluminum one that raises the boat. It works well as you can adjust it on your shoulder for going up and down hills. The biggest problem with it is that it does not collapse and has to be strapped upside down to the boat. On the other hand, it also makes a nice camp chair. I'm told (and ...

Re: Minong III
I've done the RH to Widigo via the Minong twice. Never did it the other way, primarily because of a truly miserable climb up to the ridge shortly after you leave Windigo. Kind of the same reason I won't do the Feldtman Loop trail counter-clockwise again.
