Re: Ishpeming pt trail
I recall LeftOvers, a couple of years ago discussed his trek from Chippewa to Malone. I think he took a route much closer to Lake Superior (due to a last minute canoe ferry out of Chippewa Harbor.) I was determined to bushwack this back in the 1970s then I chickened out at the last minute when I was...

Re: Weather can kill you
I have offered to overwinter to take care of Rock Harbor and Mott Island buildings but have yet to be taken up on my offer. Here's why John. . . . . http://www.imagecoast.com/images/97v388/maxresdefault.jpg A real tragedy for sure. There's a lot of speculation in the article. My first thought was t...

Isle Royale Recreated in Ice Statue
Each year I follow Winter Carnival at my alma mater, Michigan Tech in Houghton. This year the theme was centered around frozen vacations spots and one of the snow statue entries this week was based on Isle Royale. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t31.0-8/10900057_782140335172636_4334...

Re: Rock Harbor Lodge
I'm looking forward to trying the cabins at Windigo. They are certainly much more rustic than the accommodations in Rock Harbor but they have a certain type of appeal. I spent a week staying at the Rock Harbor Lodge in the Fall of 2013 and really enjoyed myself. The two sets of housing are really qu...

Re: Rangers with guns
At least the Rangers are there to keep the peace. What about those that carry illegal, concealed firearms.I mention this because I have seen people carrying that werent rangers, in other parks. If one can legally carry a concealed firearm in Michigan then you can legally carry (concealed) in Isle R...

Re: Rangers with guns
At the risk of getting too political I will simply note that, there has always been a minimal law enforcement presence on the Island (working essentially as rangers), but since 9/11 and in particular since the creation of the Department of Homeland Security there have been large sums of money made a...

Re: First Time to the East Side
I am sure you will have a great time as "East-Enders". In addition to the Moskey Basin campground, your revised itinerary offers an excellent opportunity for experiencing Greenstone Ridge vistas (weather permitting). A word of mild caution. Don't underestimate your "easy day" alo...

Re: Good Video about the wolves and moose of IR
Excellent video. Did you notice that one of the wolves appears to only have one eye? It's in the infrared segment where the extremely rare moose "growl" was captured. All you can see of the wolves are their bright white eye reflections. Look in the upper right corner of the frame.

Re: Building a Boardwalk
I was certainly a fixed labor cost and there was always tomorrow if I got something wrong. it didn't matter as long as I didn't ruin any of the material. My perspective more about handling exeptional situations. If it looks like I'm running out of material and I might need to hoof it, 10 mile...

Hopefully that works for you and you can get to the album. Looks like fun, huh? As soon as I logged in, the link worked. I don't have an account so I used my deceased wife's account. I just need to be careful I don't "LIKE" stuff, lest I shock some of her friends, LOL. I always wondered (...

Re: Northern Lights - Hints/Advice
HI Is there a better area on the island where you see the northern lights better than others? Thanks Theoretically the further north you are, the bigger and brighter the Northern Lights will be although they are so much larger than the size of the Island that location north vs. south shouldn't make...
