Re: "Sequester" impact for Isle Royale

This is probably going to effect more boaters than hikers. No one hikes to Amygdaloid, ... Perhaps. But the Amygdaloid rangers helped us get off the island in a day from Todd Harbor, for medical attention. Luckily it was "just" a broken wrist without complications, but if they were not ab...

Re: 9 days: Rx Harbor to Washington Creek

Been working too hard (ah yes, in the pharma business). Completely missed the the Ginger reference, maybe because as young boy I had a crush on Mary Ann 8) . And now that we've completely hi-jacked this thread... apologies to Shelb. For some non-rational reasons I can't figure out, I'd go East to We...

Re: 9 days: Rx Harbor to Washington Creek

A 1 inch piece of peeled raw ginger eaten 15 minutes before departure is probably the most effective way to prevent seasickness. That's what Gilligan was trying to tell the Skipper, but the Professor figured it would be difficult to measure, given the clear potential for a placebo effect. Clinical ...

Re: 9 days: Rx Harbor to Washington Creek

My toughest hiking boy has an issue with sea-sickness (actually - any motion sickness). We have decided to drive an extra 2 hours to take the MN ferry rather than one of the Michigan Ferries. (NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN OPTION - PLEASE do NOT begin a discussion on it!) In that case you definitely want to...

Re: 9 days: Rx Harbor to Washington Creek

Yikes! You are correct about options. I will look at this... I like the idea of having the zero/nero day near the end rather than at the beginning. IR presents SO many more options/challenges in planning - much more than the AT! :? Given your experience and trip length I think you hit it on the fir...

Re: Hat & Camera Question

I tend to sweat a lot and found my Tilley style wide brimmed canvas hat to be much too hot for me while backpacking, although it's great for paddling. So I picked up a nylon vented one of the same style. It is somewhat cooler, but I still ended up using a bandana. So obviously a matter of personal p...

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2013 edition

I need 2 more items for my complete overhaul - Expend UL7 sleeping pad and a Kelty Salida 2 tent. Problem is I buy 90% of my REI items on clearance, so my dividend is usually quite pathetic.... Love the Exped UL7. Consider the Schnozzel Pumpbag to go with it if you really want to splurge (works gre...

Re: Canoe motors and transportation

The Ranger III is the Park Service boat that runs out of Houghton. It's the largest boat that goes to I.R. and most stable--i.e. least likely to get sea sick on :). It stops at Mott Island to drop off supplies for the NPS, but you can get off there--just make sure you let them know when you get your...

Tampico wrote:If you want to leave your motor at Moskey, bring a bicycle lock and lock it to a tree. No hiker is going to steal an outboard motor and I can't imagine any boater doing so, either. With a bike lock, you don't have to worry about it.
Well that was a little too obvious for me :? .

Re: Canoe motors and transportation

Rock Harbor (the body of water) is fairly protected from the lake swells--there are reefs between the outer islands that break them down. But it still is a 10 mile long body of water, so it can get rough and occasionally too rough for a canoe--but probably not much more so than a 10 mile wide lake. ...

Re: Rock Harbor to Scoville Point trail

It's a great hike! It's all flat. The trail on the Superior side has dramatic views of the shoreline, lake and outer islands, but is rockier and a little rough. But nothing to speak of really, just have to watch your footing and maybe look for the trail across some open rock. The Tobin Harbor side i...

Re: Portage between Lake Whittlesey and Chippewa Harbor

It's not terrible, but you do have to watch your footing. From my 2002 trip log of that same route: "This portage probably has the roughest footing of the trip with more rocks and roots than the others, though not as steep as some. Beautiful scenery at the end of the portage looking up Chippewa...
