Re: UP as a 3-season home

Get an attorney review all the documents and make sure all is in order. It's worth the few extra bucks you will pay to save you a ton of headaches down the road. There are a lot of boundary disputes in the UP because much of the area was never properly surveyed. You'd get two landowners who agreed t...

Re: UP as a 3-season home

Don, I've got a summer place in the eastern U.P. near DeTour Village and spend the summers there from May 1 - September 1. We are about 60 miles from Sault Ste. Marie and the Chippewa International Airport is about 40 miles away. There is also an International Airport in Pelston, about 1 hour away. ...

Re: Canoeing From Lane Cove to Belle Isle?

As you read this forum, you'll find that I hate agreeing with JohnH on anything, especially his ability to fish. I spent 5 days on Bell Isle in May 2006. There was no one else in the camp the entire week; not even a ranger (and it wasn't the show tunes, either, JohnH). When the weather was good, whi...

Re: Voyaguer II Taking Reservations

Like anything else, the earlier the better. I think that there was one time I couldn't get on for an intra-island trip, but I've never been denied a spot. Don and Jennifer go above and beyond to accommodate you. If there's room, you'll get on.

Voyaguer II Taking Reservations

The automated reservations system is not working, but Don and Co. are taking reservations by phone. They are manually entering everything. It's fun to listen to him talk his way through the data entry process. I though I was the only one who talked my computer! :D

Re: Route help for 5 day trip

If you haven't done some serious kayaking before, IR is probably not a good place to start. You would be limited to interior coves and protected harbors. Any open water crossings, i.e. around Blake Point, Daisy Farm to Chippewa, etc. would be a bad idea for a first timer. If you've done a lot of can...

Re: Malone Bay to Rock Harbor 2 Days?

You might be able to do Malone to RH in two days or it might take you 6 weeks. I've got out with that plan and sat the entire time in Malone waiting for a change in the weather that never came. My advice. Take the Voyageur II. Then, just before you leave, check the long range forecast. If the winds ...

And I learned a valuable lesson. When JohnH is eating out of his trough, don't touch it. I darn near lost a finger!!!!

Re: Happy Birthday JohnHens!

Wow, 10 months shy of being older than dirt! But it does explain the ramp on his kayak with the squirrels, mice, fox, and moose walking up two by two. Old habits are hard to break. (OK, the truce is over. I managed to go almost 48 hours)

Re: Source for dehydrated bulk foods

FWIW, my vegetarian daughter announced last year that she wanted to go to IR with me. That was the good news. The bad news is that she objected to almost all the ingredients that were in my 20+ packages of freeze dried food. So, I bought a dehydrator and spent the better part of January through Apri...

Unexpected Consequence of Using This Forum

Well, as all of you know, I met JohnH on this forum and then in person last May. I also had the pleasure of meeting his wonderful partner, Trish. My daughter, Kat, and I spent the better part of ten days camping, padddling, hiking, and enjoying "potluck" dinners with them. I'm sure you als...

Re: How are the mosquitos and black flies?

Tom, I was actually able to zoom in on the MODIS imagery. They are in Shelter 4 at Daisy Farm with plastic in front of the screen waitng for the Spring thaw. I beleive they were sipping bloody mary's. I'm surprised you didn't see them doing the happy dance. And, if you use the special listening dev...
