Re: September weather

I’m in Copper Harbor right now and it feels like fall is in the air. I haven’t see a biting bug yet. Hope it stays that way over the next 15 days on the island.

Re: September weather

I'm heading over Friday, and while weather forecasts can change very quickly it looks like it's going to be a very nice week. 50's/60's along the lake and warmer on the ridges. I have usually experienced a little rain every single day, usually at night.

Re: Electronics

I just ordered one since I'll be on the island solo for 15 days. Look forward to seeing how well the battery keeps with very limited daily use. You're gone by now but hope you have a good trip!

Re: Info on campsites ?

I'm always early-to-rise, early-to-camp, so I usually get my choice (typically finish my hiking day around noon or earlier). And I have shared tent sites and shelters with people several times during "full" conditions. You'l be fine!

Re: Algae bloom alert in effect for all of Chickenbone Lake

Oh man. I'm hoping this clears up before mid-September. This is the one thing I'm worried about with my upcoming trip, since I'll be staying at pretty much all the inland lake sites (Desor, Hatchett, Richie, Chickenbone).

Re: 10 days / 9 night food plan

Yea our schedule wouldn’t work with a resupply. Also we just got back and it worked out great to just carry it all (I don’t like being forced to maintain a schedule —meeting a boat or making it to a post office on time). The food plan worked out for us really well. 14 days would be another challeng...

Re: Three people evacuated

One of the most dangerous things about dehydration is that people don't realize they're getting dehydrated. You should always drink more than you think you need, and make sure you're eating salt and taking electrolytes. On my first backpacking trip I wasn't drinking nearly enough water and by the ti...

Re: 10 days / 9 night food plan

When I backpacked the Minong and Greenstone in 2011 (14 days), I did a food drop at the Windigo Ranger station by mailing myself food (Windigo serves as a post office and the Ranger there is the resident postmaster. Mail is delivered by the Voyager II). It really does save packweight. From talking ...

Re: 10 days / 9 night food plan

I'm starting to build my meal plan for my 14-night trip next month. Hearing you say "it looks like a lot of food, but really..." is totally resonating with me right now. I think my backpack is going to be half filled with food when I hit Rock Harbor  Hope it's a good trip and thanks f...

Re: September Itinerary Advice

I guess thinking about it more, a short day after Hugginin means a long "free" day at Windigo. I was hoping for a shower at the Windigo end of my trip, but I guess the store will be closed by that point. I'm assuming there should be other things to check out, since it's almost a rest day ...

Re: 2018 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!

Let's try this again! Had to cancel my Spring trip due to an unfortunate family matter, but ready to hit the Isle for my first Autumn expedition. I'm hoping to catch some color changes and maybe seeing some bull moose fighting it out on this trip. This will be my longest trip so far. There's a littl...

Re: Unfounded Safety Concerns

Then why refer to it as the "Islands Facebook page" from the start? That is false. It seems to ridicule people with specific questions, intentionally obfuscate any intended argument being made, and avoids the fact that there is a legitimate source for information. If it were to simply ref...

Re: TR 6/18: RH; CH-McCC-RH

Sounds like a really great trip! Being disappointed that my own Spring sojourn has turned into an Autumnal one, I rely on these reports to keep me going. Thank you!
