Re: Favorite Freeze Dried Flavor

I've got a soft spot for the chili mac. I'm a "spicy" kind of guy.

Re: Lake Holloran

Chorizo, the Winds are really something aren't they, although I've never seen worse mosquitos Yeah, my favorite place besides I.R. Problem is it is nearly as hard to get to (from N. Wisconsin where I live) plus people I know have had trouble getting around there as late as early July due to snowpac...

Re: Lake Holloran

Interesting, I've never heard that before. I have never been there but back in 2003 my wife and I shared a campsite at North Desor with a couple of older gentlemen in their late 60's and early 70's. I think their names were Jerry and Earl. (and if either of you guys are reading this please let me kn...

Re: First Visit/Possible Itinerary

Your June 30th is probably more difficult than the day before. However if you are in good physical shape and your boots are well broken in you will be fine. The better your conditioning, the more broken in your boots are, and certainly the lighter your pack is, the easier any route will become. This...

Re: Off Trail Footwear

I'm surprised no one's mentioned insulated booties. I've taken a pair on every trip, backpacking or just camping. Most of my camping is in the spring or the fall and it just feels great to have warm feet, out of my boots, at the end of the day. Yeah I'm with you. I bring a pair of North Face down i...

Re: Backpacking Lunch

1.A Powerbar or similar energy-type product or even homemade energy bars.
2.Many fistfuls of homemade granola.
3.Gorp.
4.Homemade beef jerky.
5.Lots of water.

Lightweight, lots of calories and no preparation necessary.

Re: What Else Do I Need?

All the above suggestions are good ones. Additionally I might include (depending on how light I'm trying to pack) a pack or two of cards and a paperback book or two. These have been very nice to have in a two or three day downpour.

Re: Itinerary...Any thoughts or suggestions?

This is an ambitious itinerary but with it you will see a heck of a lot of the island. I suspect that was your goal. I don't want to tell you not to do this but I do have a couple of things that you should consider, since you asked. 1. If you have been to Isle Royale before and have hiked a number o...

Very cool Tom. Thanks. My Photoshop Elements will do it too but I have not tried it yet. I will have to give it a go on this years trip.

Re: What do you never leave home (to Isle Royale) without?

My wife and I took headnets every year for many years and never used them. We never needed them. Those were all trips we took in early June when the bugs can be bad. Living on water in N. Wisconsin we consider ourselves fairly bug resistant. Well about 4-5 years ago we took our most ambitious trip t...

Re: National Geographic Map of ISRO

It is the standard trail map. The one you'll get from the Park Service at Rock Harbor. Get it if you plan to go. The only reason you would need a different map would be for water navigation around the island.
