Isle Royale in the News

Post by kfinnguy »

I was bored today so I googled Isle Royale in the news section of google. I found some interesting articles including some about the stock market in Isle Royale copper in 1900 to the acquisition of the island in 1935. It is very interesting. Heres the link.

Not to get too political, but it was interesting to read about the consternation caused by the lack of private interest to put forward money after the federal government announced it would not buy the Island from the logging concerns, citing the recent big growth in government and the resulting tax burden.

So I wonder where the money eventually came from?

On another note, here is a story about the 1936 fire that consumed 25% of the Island. They talk about 1800 CCC workers building a fire line from Chippewa Harbor to McCargoe Cove in order to protect the east end. It also speaks of saving the Holger Johnson tourist camp at Chippewa Harbor. Could this have included the “school house” still there?

Baltimore Sun October 27, 1935:

"MAJESTIC Isle Royale in Lake Superior is being made a national park. The plan has been afoot since 1931, but the final touch which made it a reality was the signing of a bill by President Roosevelt, only recently, authorizing the $700,000 purchase of the land still remaining to private owners."

Thank you, Keweenaw.

That was just 5 months after the Milwaukee Journal article stating the federal government wasn't interested.
