Which is all well and good until something goes terribly wrong. I feel that leaving a means of emergency communications behind is about a sensible as leaving your first aid kit and rain-gear behind in the hopes that you won't need them.
I agree with you, if the phone is an easy option for emergency communication then why not take it. I have found on many of my trips (not just to IR) that it would be quite useless for communication most of the time, but you never know, and if you really needed help it might be your only ticket out. I prefer a SPOT unit or similar for emergencies, but that is also more stuff to carry. I actually do take my phone on wilderness trips, but mostly because it is the lightest option I have for a decent camera. If I keep it on airplane mode to take pictures during the day and powered down at night, the battery will last up to 5 days or so.
