Park headquarters in Houghton worth visiting?

Post by SamMc »

Will be visiting IRNP this coming summer and am beginning to do some planning. Is there anything worth seeing at the park headquarters in Houghton, or is that just administrative offices?

Thanks

A nice little book/gift shop with rangers around to answer questions, but pretty small. The coolest thing (IMHO) is their scale 3D sculpture of the island! It really puts the height of the ridges into perspective.

Are you planning to be in Houghton for other reasons, like departing on the Ranger III? Or just passing through on your way to Copper Harbor? If you are planning to take the Ranger III then the park headquarters in right on the dock area where the Ranger III moors so you can't miss the office. If you're just passing through or wondering if an special trip is worth the effort then I'd suggest the whole Houghton and Keweenaw area has much to offer. And don't forget a dinner stop at the Ambassador (great pizza and sandwiches) and a breakfast or lunch at the Suomi Bakery/Restaurant.

Thank you both. I wasn't sure where exactly the headquarters was located in town. Helpful to know that it's right there where we'll catch the Ranger III. My daughter and I hope to be participating in a Moosewatch expedition in August, and will be arriving in Houghton a day early. Looking for things to do and places to eat and sleep. Sounds like the park headquarters is worth a visit.
