We are planning a trip to Isle Royale, late July 2011. My husband & I, father and three to four kids. The pictures look amazing, so many places to pick from. We have some experience hiking/camping. Please share your ideas on recommended camp sites, and routes to take. Plan on taking the boat from Houston on Tuesday and returning to Houston on Saturday.

Thank you!

Houston? That's some trip to ISRO. Which boat are you using to get to the Park? The boat used would help us give you some ideas on where to stay.

Hey Joy,
A couple things to consider. First, if you have 7 in your party you are a "group" and must reserve and stay at group campgrounds. See http://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/group-camping.htm for more info. This limits your campground options and also means you can not use the shelters and must tent it. Second, how much backpacking experience do you all have? If you take a boat out of Michigan you'll come/go from Rock Harbor and have limited options with only a few days, unless you're ready to put on some trail miles. If you take the Voyageur II out of Minnesota, you can do a McCargoe Cove to Chippewa Harbor trip. There's been a couple recent threads in the Trails and Campgrounds forum that should help out on the options. Finally, you could consider staying in a housekeeping cabin in Rock Harbor and day hike from there. The lodge also does day trips that get you to some interesting places. http://foreverlodging.com/destination.c ... ertyKey=75
