I visited Enchanted Rock in Texas this May, and I can say that I really recommend it. It's out of the way, but if you have friends or family is lets say the Austin or Dallas area it's not too bad of a drive since there are some other neat places to visit as well.
My friend and I decided to go out and visit Longhorn Cavern State Park on the way to the rock. The caverns were really neat and they even have concerts down in one section and one room was used by the Native American's as a meeting room of sorts. Created by running water these caves are almost bare of any stalagmites and the sort.
Needless to say our choice to go during the week was grand, and we got to pick just about any campsite we wanted. The campsites around us were all 25-100 yards or so from the parking lot, but they did have some primitive sites we passed by on the loop, would be great for backpacking! Ours was tucked off way to the side, one of the best walk-ins for sure. We hiked a bit the first day and went thru a rough canyon and atop the rock itself. The next morning went out a a loop of the rest of we hadn't seen and back up the rock again.
On the way back we make a very quick stop into Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and I snapped up some quick pics of longhorn cattle and buffalo.
