You are right about wool, my Grandpa swore by it, but I am alergic to wool, so I don't use that, ever.

I heard the same about down, but from personal experience of soaking it accidently, it still kept me warm all night and "I" was never wet. My down pants and jacket got quite wet, but I never did and was still warm.
