Socks / Footwear for kayaking?

Post by Wilderness Junkie »

We are heading up to IR the first week in June kayaking / fishing. Normally, my kayaking footwear consists of water shoes (the ones that look like hiking shoes but are mesh) and / or barefoot depending on the weather and my trips are limited to 2-3 hours runs.

In preperation of spending many hours in the kayak with 30-40 deg Lake Superior water potentially splashing in, what footware is recommended for colder weather / extended trips?

Thanks for any suggestions!!

You could always supplement the mesh shoes with a pair of gore-tex socks. They make insulated and non-insulated varieties. It is recommended that you wear a normal pair of socks underneath. I have a friend who swears by them, mostly for backpacking in colder/wetter regions.

Cabela's sometimes carries them. Otherwise eBay is a good alternative. They run around $35-$40. I believe some of the better ones are from the brand Rocky.

I like neoprene booties with a rubber sole. NRS has a good slection.
