The ranger I have been e-mailing called me to discuss.
She said the hammocks are fine in the backcountry, or in a designated site if it works. She does want to make sure we have the tree slings (not just rope) on the tree. She also wanted to make sure I had bug coverage.
Regarding my questions on how to fill out an itinerary when you would like to stay at a campground if possible - We basically want to state what “zone” we’ll be staying in on our itinerary for each night for backcountry. If we find a campsite that works in that zone, then we can stay there. However, you can’t put on your itinerary that you’ll be at a certain campground and then not go there. So our itinerary will show a backcountry zone each night.
This all makes sense - protects the island and keeps hikers safe with a good experience for everyone. I doubt you'll see any hammock approvals in writing, this is as good as it gets.
