Solo Backpackers and Shelters?

Post by bratsch2 »

Hello All -

I'm hoping to make my first solo trip to IR in 2016 and I was just curious... what is the etiquette for a solo backpacker when it comes to staying in shelters?

Thanks!

First come, first served.
You may, or may not share, your decision, should someone request.

I'm usually solo when hiking at ISRO. If the weather is bad, I'll offer to share a shelter with others. Most folks that hike Isle Royale are good people. Have enjoyed meeting close to 100% of the hikers.

Gotta love the search feature! I was wondering about shelter etiquette for a solo packer, especially at the sites like Todd Harbor where there's a single shelter. On my one trip last year I was always early into camp and got first pick every single time. I ended up sharing my shelter with two guys at Moskey so they didn't have to tent camp. But I would feel weird if say, a group of four got to camp and I was hogging up the whole shelter myself.

I solo often. I will usually take a shelter and I just offer to share. sometimes people will just hang out till bedtime and go to their tent, some will stay. some just come to cook and eat out of the bugs reach. One really stormy night there were seven of us. Don't sweat it.
