Shelter Dimension

Post by Nick »

There is a sill in the shelters that is about 4' off the floor. It's the shelf that we all put or small stuff on. I need to know how thick that sill is. It looks to me about 4". Can someone get an accurate measurement for me? No speculations. I need an exact measurement. So, if someone is going out to the Island soon, can you get it for me?
Thanks.

I think it's just a 2x4, isn't it? 1 and 1/2 inches by 3 and 1/2 inches. Can't imagine it being a special cut.

It is made from 2x4s but there are 2 of them so there are quantity 2 standard dimension 2x4s that make that ledge. The total thickness would be 1-1/2 inches x 2 = 3 inches plus whatever small air gap there might be from place to place.

Not an exact measurement, but it's thicker than 3". The lumber is rough sawn, not dressed to finished dimensions. Also, pre-1961 even a finished 2x4 was 1 5/8 and pre-1956 wider than that (1 3/4 I think). I'll let you speculate from there :).

Rough sawn is usually exact not a 1/2" smaller.

But someone should really just measure it for the guy.

My guess is a total of 4" - from the picture those look like actual rough sawn.

I'll be out there next week, and my compass has a 4" ruler on the baseplate. I'll see what I can do to gather some data for you.

Bobcat,
Thanks. That's just what I need. An exact measurement is what I'm looking for. I need the number ASAP as I'll be on the Island for two weeks starting 9/5.
