My goodness that's a lot of snow. I have to admit, every year that passes makes me like winter less and less. I guess I will never move to the UP even though I love Isle Royale. Greg R.

Living in Houghton during the 1970’s caused me to fall in love with winter and the snow. It’s why I discovered Isle Royale. Try to describe just 20 feet of snow to someone. All they do is stare at you with a funny look on their face.

Now I hate shoveling snow; even the few times a year here in Northern Illinois that it snows.

I hate the ole snow shoveling too, so I usually just plow it....Which I've had to do 3 times so far this month, and it looks like I'll have to do it again tomorrow.

But...If I lived up in the UP, I'd have to have something a lot bigger than a small plow. Often on our trips to Copper Harbor, we have stopped at "Snow Gauge Park", a rest area on US 41 between Mohawk and Phoenix, to see this 35-foot 'Mounument' to the white stuff....

Also, featured in this nifty site.......

And from Keweenaw FreeGuide.com.......

"The Keweenaw Peninsula receives over 200 inches of snow each winter. It’s a figure of much local pride, and is prominently celebrated by this 35 record snowfall of 390.4 inches (32 feet) set in 1979 as well as its all time low of 81.3 inches set in 1931. Each winter current snowfall is marked by an arrow along the side of the gauge, while in the summer the gauge displays the final snow amount of the previous winter. Joining the “Snow Thermometer” is a small park with a few picnic tables, grills, and toilets. A rustic bench at the gauge’s base allows for photo opportunities. A deep hardwood forest borders the park and encompasses the views."

I worked at Rock Harbor in '79 when they had the record snowfall. When I arrived the 1st week in June there were still quite a few snow drifts on the island.

My first year of college at Michigan Tech in Houghton was the winter of '79.

Every winter after that didn't seem like much of a big deal ;)
