Deer Ticks on IR?-Article from Mpls Star Tribune

I have heard of an occasional tick other than a winter tick being found on IR that was usually attributed to being brought over on gear used to camp before going out to IR.

I'm agreeing with John, and think the article is a misleading.

The quote was

But a park service employee this year reported finding a deer tick on his body after he'd been there for a month, meaning he had picked it up while on the island.

While that might be true, it DOESN'T mean the tick survived the winter. Blackleg ticks (deer ticks) and all hard ticks in general only typically have three blood meals in a lifetime. The can (and do, often) go for months without a bloodmeal, so it's not like finding one after a month indicates it's been wintering on the Isle..

I emailed one of the Natural Resources folks on the Island and got this reply:

"We have found a couple of female deer ticks and had an expert id them."
