Current conditions on the island (2013)

Post by MikeT »

I talked to Ranger Greg in Houghton today when I was ordering our season passes and he reported that there has been 2 heavy snow falls in the last week and they are expecting another heavy snow over the next couple of days. The Ranger was scheduled to make it's first run to the island tomorrow and they have cancelled the trip. He also reported that Washington Harbor was frozen solid from the North Gap to Windigo. A run is scheduled to Windigo on the 28th (I believe that is date he said) and he said it might be in jeopardy unless the coast guard does something.

I sure hope the ice breaks up. We might have to put everyone on the bow of the Voyageur to break the ice on the 4th

After coming up for the first boat a couple years ago and getting stuck in a blizzard in Duluth, followed by entering the North Gap to see snow on the rocks (I think you were both on that boat with me, Nancy and Mike), well, I'm glad May didn't work out for me and I won't be up until June... 8)

At present, the forecast for tomorrow into Friday for our area is a possible 4-6" of snow. It's mid-April. I'm OK with Spring arriving. Geesh.

In '79 there were snowdrifts left well into June--but at least the ice was out :). Hope it clears out soon.

How much of an effect does a late spring arrival have on the moose population? I would think by the time anything starts growing (probably some time mid-May at this point?) they would be practically starving to death.

Yeppers, that was also my very first trip and quickly realized how unprepared I was for the temps. My husband doesn't need as many layers as I do. Live and learn, after five trips, in all kinds of weather, I am finally completely prepared.

I told Mike the same thing. Trekking poles, ski poles, basically the same thing eh?

Thanks for that! I'm really glad that snow is a good insulator as I think we will be putting it on the tent to keep us warm.

Forgive my quotes as I don't know how to put the names in them.

Holy crap to ski/skin Isle Royale would be amazing. I'd love to make a few turns down the East exposure of Sugar Mountain.

Record lows in Duluth and points north this morning.

I still have 5-6" of snow on the ground.

Somebody needs to talk to that groundhog!!!
"And standing on the the crest of the Greenstone Ridge, I suddenly had this desire to retreat north to where I just come, to stay in the backcountry, to spend another day in a place where the only deadline I had was to pitch the tent before dark."

I saw an article a couple weeks ago that some district attorney in Ohio was indicting Puxatawney Phil for fraud. Apparently there is a groundhog in Ohio (Buckeye Chuck) that they were willing to grant immunity to if he agreed to testify against Phil.....
