Ice Coverage

Post by Ingo »

Ice cover for the Great Lakes is at 22%, about the same as 2014 when there was an ice bridge. Haven't found specific comparable numbers for just Superior. Here's a place to explore if you're inclined https://www.glerl.noaa.gov/data/ice/#currentConditions. This current chart says 28% as of yesterday--shows it's an inexact science.

Now we've crossed the line. This is from the same NOAA website:
NOTICE: These images are provided as a public service with the understanding that NOAA resources
be used responsibly to allow for access by all interested users.
Unreasonably frequent reloading or "hotlinking" of these images into outside web pages adversely affects NOAA's
ability to serve the public and is forbidden.
Violation of this policy may be cause to temporarily block access
to this site or pursue legal action in response to a denial-of-service attack on a Federal government computer.

Thank you for your interest and cooperation.
My warning is somewhat "tongue in cheek", but I do wonder if their warning is simply old or if their servers are actually on a 20 year old internet connection.

I love how the clouds in many of these pictures makes it so clear that the Lake affects the regional temperatures and humidity.

There must be a decent ice bridge now. The websites for lake ice show medium lake ice from the island to shore. Unless there are some locals that say there is some open water I'll continue to have hope. Wish it was possible to chase or tempt them out there. Maybe some moose burger every 100 yards for the 15 miles out to the island. Lol!

Quite the contrary, the Lake Superior ice pack is growing. As of 2/11/18, 77.1% of Lake Superior was ice covered, the most since 2014.

As for an ice bridge, according to the Canadian Ice Service, there’s been an ice bridge of 2” or greater thickness between the mainland and Isle Royale for over two weeks now. All of last week, the ice bridge was greater than 6” in thickness. The ice shelf hugging the Island's north shore is greater than a foot thick.

Tobin Harbor still had ice on it the other day (5/9/18). RIII is heading to Windigo, will be interesting to see how it is going in.

Looks like Tobin is mostly shore ice.
