Duck ID

Post by thesneakymonkey »

Can someone help me ID this duck? They were very small and diving about. They do not appear to be loons or mergs. Found in front of shelter #3 at Moskey 8/5/17. The three babies were together without a larger parent duck around.

Doh. Tough call with the low light and no reference to size, but if they were diving about and given I've seen adults at Moskey before, they might be immature Goldeneyes. There might be a faint patch of white on that third one, but other than that no great plumage to date.

Ok I was hoping someone would say goldeneye. That was the closest I could find in a waterfowl ID book. Hard to tell from the pics. I will have the video of them up soon, but they were quite small. Id say half the size of a grown mallard.
