Kinsman Indpendant runs aground off Isle Royale

Post by johnhens »

On Nov 24th, 1990, the freighter Kinsman Independant ran aground off the entrance to Siskiwit Bay. The details are sketchy other than the vessel was 25 miles outside the shipping lane. I have not been able to find more info other than this link from a book. Had never heard of this.

You had me going John, until I saw the date. Even so, that was quite recent. The Kinsman Independent was heading to Thunder Bay. My theory is the inexperienced Third Mate at the helm mistook the Menagerie Island for the Passage Island Lighthouse. That is a great quote, "A blind person with a white cane could have done a better job of navigating the ship".

Interestingly, in 2005 the Kinsman Independent was sold and recommissioned as the Voyageur Independent. Then again in 2008 as the Ojibway and is still sailing. My ethereal theory is this boat has always had ties to The Island that just could not be resisted.
