A long walk on the beach

Post by DonNewcomb »

I'll let the group try to guess where this photo was taken. The hints are that it was yesterday (3 March) and that the panorama has North on the left and South on the right. The white stuff is sand, not snow. For miles in every direction there is virtually no sign of human activity.

Not a bad guess but on Dauphin Island the beach would run mostly East-West, not North-South. Also, I think that the dunes on the unpopulated (West) end of Dauphin Island were pretty badly washed out by Hurricane Katrina and not yet recovered.

My guess is it's south of Illinois and I don't know much about anything south of Illinois. Do people live south of Illinois?

Yes, but only during the winter. The rest of the year it's just gators and snakes.

The panorama was taken at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park near Port St. Joe, Fla. I was standing about here.

Very nice. I guess there is reason to go south of Illinois.

Did the BP oil spill hit that area? How's it doing?

When I.R. is closed, for sure :D
BTW, what's in Illinois? I usually just set the cruise, lock the steering wheel and take a nap
(just kidding... about the question anyways  )

The oil never reached this far east. There is no trace of the oil from the Deepwater Horizon left anywhere. The Gulf of Mexico is a very dynamic biologic environment and what oil the cleanup crews didn't remove, the bacteria ate. All the oil that was supposed to be lurking offshore, to rise like Godzilla, isn't there. This area is not like the Gulf of Alaska where the stuff hangs around for decades.

Lincoln was born in Kentucky, spent a fair amount of his boyhood days in Indiana and got stuck in Illinois when their wagon broke down on the way to somewhere else.

OK, only 2 out of 3 of those are correct. ;)

LOL. From everything I've read, Lincoln had plenty of opportunity to go to Iowa or spend time there but he only spent a total of just a few days.

Just having some fun but on a more serious side, with all the stuff going on here now, some of that Iowa real estate looks inviting.
