What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2017 Edition

Post by fonixmunkee »

Dividend season is right around the corner. Keep your eyes on your snail mail and email...notifications should be going out soon.

So, what are you going to buy with your dividend and that sweet, sweet, sweet 20% off coupon?

For me, I'll be either buying a new warm-weather bag, OR a camping quilt. Depends on what catches my eye (and wallet).

REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus Tent, I think

I also need a new headlamp and maybe a DeLorme Missouri Atlas and Gazetteer, since I am living in St Louis now.

Lots of possibilities :)

Either a solar shower or another packable camp chair to go with my Alite. I'm finding that my wife is showing more interest in extended trips and those are a couple of items that she would appreciate.

Probably some nice lightweight baselayers. I have mid and heavy weight and I've found I don't need that warm of a baselayer on June/July trips.

PSA: 2017 REI dividends are now posted to your online account. 20% off coupons should follow before the end of March.

I forgot I had a dividend until I stopped at the REI store in Knoxville and bought some long underpants. With the 20% off and dividend I walked out of the store with a $59 (outrageously overpriced) underwear for a reasonable $32.

I ended up not buying a new sleeping bag or quilt because I FOUND MY OLD SLEEPING BAG after SEVEN YEARS of it being missing.

Instead I bought some new ski poles and some new lock cylinders for my bike rack. BORING.

I ended up buying an REI Igneo 17 sleeping bag. Wanted something lighter and more compressible than my old 4 lb bag.

I bought a MSR Pocket Rocket II. Don't need it, have a thing for stoves. Love MSR stoves. Bought a few other things for trips.

Looks like an updated version of the Micro Rocket I have, now discontinued.

My stove is the one piece of equipment I haven't swapped out since I started backpacking and don't plan to, but man do I love the sound of an MSR firing up.

Caldera Cone system. It's an alcohol stove and probably my most favorite investment. Has a windscreen that serves as a pot holder and is pretty efficient. I can store everything together--stove, spoon, pot--all together. Cannot recommend it enough.

Actually I'd say the caldera cone is tied with my bear bag setup. Had a trip in northern MN where others got their bags broken into by rodents and mine went untouched.
