Proper Pronunciation

Post by kfinnguy »

How do you say Isle Royale?

Do you say it Isle Roy-ALE? (with and emphasis on the ALE)

Or Isle Royal? (minus the e)

I personally use the emphasis on the ALE.

Poll doesn't work for me either.

But, it is ROYAL.

It told me the form was invalid, too. So, my response is, "I pronounce it like ROYAL".

Sorry its not working. But I've just always called it with the emphasis on the ALE. I posted this because I saw some Youtube videos were they pronounced it ROYAL and I thought it was weird. Guess I pronounce it odd.

From Wikitravel:
Its French name might lead you to pronounce it "eel roy-AL", but the common pronunciation is the very midwestern "ile ROY-ul".

Try this - interesting:

" Isle Royale "

Have a great time on the island, however you pronounce it.

I'll Royal seems to be the most common pronunciation that I've heard from rangers and frequent travelers in the park. Greg R.

Congratulations on picking up on this before you get to the island!
I didn't realize until my THIRD visit that I wasn't saying it correctly (correctly being however the natives decide it should be.)
No one ever corrected me, it just finally dawned on me they weren't saying what I was saying.

Maybe that's because by my third visit, I had moved to Lancaster, PA where place-name pronunciation is of earth-shattering importance. Woe be to the poor non-native here who refers to it as Lan-CAS-ter. Ninety-five deeply offended people will swoop down out of nowhere to proclaim in unison "It's LANK-uh-ster." (The "you idiot!" is implied. Usually.)

It was nice that no one swooped down on me to yell "It's Isle ROY-al, (you idiot!)" but I did feel a little embarrassed when I realized I was using the "touristy" pronunciation.

I guess I have been saying it wrong then too! I have always emphasized the "ale".
