30th-10th itinerary

Post by dbeckman »

Here's what we're planning on:

June 30th- Copper Harbor to Rock Harbor.

July 1st- Rock Harbor to Chippewa Harbor via the voyager.

2nd- Chippewa to Lake Whittlesey

3rd- Whittlesey to Wood Lake.

4th- Wood to Lake Richie.

5th- Richie to Chickenbone Lake.

6th- Chickenbone to Birch Island

7th- Birch Island to Belle Isle, Lane Cove, or Duncan Bay-- depending on the winds.

8th- Duncan Narrows

9th- Rock Harbor or Tookers Island

10th- Back to Copper Harbor.

We're in our mid 20's, in pretty good shape, relatively experienced and eager.
We'll leave some room to play with once we get up north. If it's calm on, say, the 6th, and it's forecasted to get rough on the 7th, we could just go all the way through to Pickerel or Lane.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,

Dan

I assume you will have a Weather Radio?
Leaving Birch Isle, you will hear waves breaking and be able to see the channel markers (red and green bouys) at the mouth of McCargoe Cove. You can gauge whether you should proceed by them.

Do you plan on paddling around Blake Pt?

That looks like a pretty good plan and I think you have plenty of time built into that route. Wife and I did a similar trip, but instead paddled from RH into Moskey Basin, portaged to Lake Richie and went the same route up through McCargo and around the eastern end. (Skipped Duncan Bay.) We did it in six days, with an extra day built in, which allowed us to camp on Tookers for the last night. Otherwise we would have just ended on Rock Harbor and skipped Tookers. We had pretty good weather though.

That is a route I'd like to try some day so be sure to post upon your return!
