I see Rydens mentioned a lot here in the forums. What exactly is Rydens?
Does anyone have a photo or link to their website?

It's a gas station, store, and small motel just on the U.S. side of the Canadian border. Also had a restaurant until this year.

Jeffrey, thanks for the link to Ryden's. They haven't updated the site in a while - it still lists [strikeout]motel[/strikeout] restaurant (corrected 8/29) as one of their services.

I called to inquire about making a reservation at the motel for the night before our upcoming trip to the island and was disappointed to learned that the motel is no longer open. They suggested that I contact the Grand Portage Lodge.

That sucks. It was always a nice, basic stay, and it was good to have a variety of lodging options.

Thanks for sharing the inel, irhikers.

Thanks for the info. This info is just in time, I was about to make reservations for out trip.....this throws a monkey into the wrench :( . Our group meets tomorrow for a training hike and gear shakedown, looks like we have another detail to discuss.

Noooooo! Bummer. Back in the days when the cafe was open, staying overnight at Rydens, walking over for breakfast, and heading to the boat was the perfect 1-2-3. I'm not saying "staying there will be missed" (those who have also spent a night would understand) but you couldn't deny the value.

As they say, the only constant is change.

That's too bad. I stayed there last September and thought it was a decent alternative before catching the boat the next morning. So at this point, what are the viable alternatives besides to camp at the park or stay at the casino?

Grand Marais isn't too terribly far away. About a 35 minute drive. Lot of motels to choose from too.
