Re: Becoming a Park Ranger
First, what kind of park ranger do you want to be? There are basically two kinds; an interpretive ranger, and a law enforcement officer or LEO. Interpretive rangers do things like staff the visitors center, lead informational hikes and meetings, work in the camp grounds and other areas that "ge...

Re: Buying Gear on Amazon.com
I bought a stove and fuel bottle from Amazon this Christmas. Great service, saved about $12 compared to REI. Ordered the stove on a Monday got it on Wednesday, no shipping cost!

Re: Hiking in Sports Sandals or Other Footwear
I would agree with Tom. I have done some day hikes in my sandals (Chacos) and even did a long day of backpacking in them because I had a wicked blister on one of my feet. Although I was able to get by, I would never plan on backpacking on the island in anything other than boots.

Re: MI to sue to close lock to keep carp out of Lake MI
If they were to completely close the locks, wouldn't that reverse the flow of the Chicago river back into Lake Michigan? That could do more harm than the carp.

Re: Looking for used gear
I've got a 1 person Slumberjack tent/bivy I'd be willing to part with. It's a single pole tent, not much room for gear, but it will keep you dry. Also have a closed cell foam pad if you are interested. Both are in good shape. PM me if you are interested.

14-17 at the mid lake buoy could easily be much bigger as the swells approach land. I don't think 20+ is out of the question.

Re: Ranger III to Windigo?
Yep. The Ranger delivers fuel, equipment, and supplies to Windigo. She makes trips there in the spring and fall to open and close the park. She docks on the West side of the dock at Windigo. The Ranger can get into Windigo?

Re: Ranger III to Windigo?
They have done trips to Windigo the last two seasons. This past year just the one trip, but in the 2008 season they made the trip 3 times. The park service would like to do the Windigo trip more often, but they have not had much success in booking passengers.

Re: In need of some suggestions for an Isle Royale Trip rout
Since John is busy building a chimney and chase for his new wood burning stove, I'll give you a sugestion. Since the Queen will drop you at Rock Harbor, your best bet would be to paddle to Moskey Basin and portage to Lake Richie. From ther it really depends on the kind of trip you want. You could ea...

Re: Fotunate Wilderness DVD and T shirts now available
Picked up a copy from the RH visitors center last week. Watched it last night. Really enjoyed the film. I was surprised to learn about the Moose's method of getting enough sodium in their diet. The moose eating large volumes of snow was also very interesting.

Re: Zebra Mussels on Isle Royale
Thanks for the real story Capt. Don. I kind of thought the story I heard may have gotten exagerated as it passed from ranger to ranger before I finally heard it. I by no means ment to imply that the Wenona was the source of the mussels on Isle Royale. I assume they got there just like they got to al...
