Hello G.L.75 and welcome to the forums. Took my first visit this past August, and read up a ton on these boards. I have to say, it wasn't as good as folks around here make it sound. IT WAS BETTER. I'd wager dollars to doughnuts that you'll find I.R. to be full of awesome, too.

We purhased a couple cases of civilian-versions of MREs at ~$5 a piece + S&H:

On our August '08 Isle Royale trip, we each packed 1 MRE per day for 6 days. There were pros and cons I'd like to share, to kick in my $0.02 as it were.
