Re: Trekking Poles

I use a single pole. It has saved me some face plants and I feel it has extended my years of backpacking since a hip replacement 9 years ago. It also doubles as a pole for my silnylon tarp set up. My kids were grateful I had it last week while crossing some wet areas last week. I led the way using ...

Re: TR 9/22 to 9/26 RH to MB

I like the alcohol stove and having a cat, the parts are rescued from the recycle bin. Mine is based on the Cat Stove, plans are on the net if you are interested. My daughter caught nothing but snags, losing her best lure and then while on the trail repeatedly getting her pole hung up on branches ...

Re: TR 9/22 to 9/26 RH to MB

Nice report. My daughter, son and I were there last week as well, you may remember us first as the trio on the Tobin Harbor Trail and later at Moskey, me asking you about your twig stove and then at L.Richie as we were headed to Chickenbone West. We also saw the otters at Moskey, the first time down ...

Re: The Top 3 Best and Worst Campgrounds (Trail Accessible O

My Fav's, 1) Huginnen Cove,2)Lane Cove,3)Todd Harbor....but these can change in order at the drop of a moose pebble. Least Fav.'s 1) Rock Harbor,2)Wash. Creek,3) Daisy Farm. Truly though, I'd love to be at any place on IR right now. How does that saying go.... A bad day on IR is still better than a ...

Re: Minong Stories

Thanks for asking.... I did a solo hike from Rock Harbor to Windigo on my first visit to IR in September of 1999. First night, Daisy, Second night, McCargo and then on to the Minong. I enjoyed a beautiful sunset at Todd on night 3. Next day was drizzly, but I continued on toward Little Todd, and on ...

Re: Best moderate route for seclusion

IMO, the Feldtman loop may be the trail that would give you a good shot at meeting some of the parameters you're seeking. You will have 8 +miles to deal with, but the terrain is not as rugged as some of the other parts of the island. Possible itinerary: Windigo to Feltdman lake with the mandatory ...

Re: Restaurant in Copper Harbor area??

I took my wife and son to CH last August and ate at the Tamarack and Mariner North. I had eaten at both places several times before over the last decade and my impression last August was not very favorable compared to my memory of past visits. Our server at the Mariner was not available for most of ...

Re: Water filter recommendation?

My Pur Hiker is 12 years old, it's filtered a thousand + liters of water. I replace the filter and O rings once a year or so, and use a coffee filter as a pre filter on the intake "acorn". I bought mine as a Pur "purifier" but they had some sort of legal hassles with labeling it a purifier rather ...

Re: Why no campfires?

MW Ed's suggestions are very good. I like campfires as much as anyone else, but now pretty much limit having them to family car camping. I've come to enjoy sitting quietly at night just listening to nature's sounds and sky watching or if there is a good moon to light the roots and rocks, taking mini ...

Re: Minong

Jerry, Most folks here would tell you that all the trails on IR are great, but I would venture that all who have done the Minong would tell you that it is the best long trail on the island. Most challenging, yes; but the rewards are proportionate to the challenge. If you start at McCargo, your first ...
