Re: 2021 trail closures?

Does anyone know when the NPS will post plans for summer 2021 rules? I specifically want to know if the full length of the Minong Ridge trail will be open, and whether hikers will be able to get cross-country zone camping permits. Both were not available last summer. The Greenstone Paper should be ...

North side either MI or MN. Can also get CN, but it is on metric with temps in Celsius, wave heights in meters and not sure if pressure is in millibars or inches of mercury. West side is MN and South side starting at Malone is either MN or MI. Become familiar with the times the open lakes forcast is...

Re: Father & Son Newbies

If your son is new to backpacking, get him out to hike with the pack he is using, with gear in it. Easier to make adjustments on the pack and gear at home. A lodge room at the end of the trip will be nice. Might want to bring a change of clothes that you can leave at the lodge (check with them when ...

Re: Water filter

Gravity filters are so very, very worth it. I have a Platypus GravityWorks and even bring it with me on solo trips. I have never considered gravity filters. I know that a lot of people love them but usually when I want water I'm on the move and don't want to take the time. But this trip will be wit...

fonixmunkee wrote: Sat Mar 30, 2019 10:38 pm What causes the mercury level to be so high in the lakes of Isle Royale? The old mines? Acid rain?
I once spoke to researchers who suspected the high mercury was from paper plants along the north shore (CN) of Superior.

Re: Inland fishing on Isle royale

I have heard of an occasional Smallie in Superior waters on the South side. If you want to catch Smallies, try Cheguamegon and Keewenaw bays and the Munnising Bay. Early June, Lake Trout may still be shallow in Siskiwit. Better in the AM or PM. Fish the backside of islands opposite the direction of ...

Wolf Reintroduction and the American Marten

From the IRNP FB page: You may have heard about the wolves of Isle Royale National Park, who, alongside moose, form an ecologically fascinating predator-prey system - the subject of the longest ever predator-prey research study which began in 1958! There’s lots of natural variation in wolf and moose...

Re: Wise Old Man of Isle Royale?

From an old man and maybe one not so wise who has been going to Isle Royale in all seasons since Moby Dick was a minnow my knowledge of this wondrous place is free for the asking, as it is from all the other old hands on this site. Thanks everybody. Same here (maybe not since Moby Dick was a minnow)

Re: Wise Old Man of Isle Royale?

Maybe the forums should buy ad space on the site, to direct some traffic here! I followed the link to the site, and all the courses posted so far (hydration, cooking, maps . . .) look pretty backpacking boilerplate, that is, not IR specific. I wonder if the site is part of a more general effort? Th...
