Re: The Edmund Fitzgerald

I was stationed aboard the USCGC Woodrush which assisted in search for the Fitz. I reported aboard after the sinking but there was still a lot of the crew that was onboard at the time and had some great stories. I spent 8 years in the Coast Guard aboard various cutters on the east/west coasts along...

The America dock also sustained a lot of damage by ice in the past 2 winters, so it was not at its best to withstand the storm.
It will be interesting to see what additional damge may be done with the onset of winter.

Anyone know anything about Sargent Lake? I have a 1959 park brochure that has the high-level, not-for-navigating map that shows a trail from McCargoe Cove (across from the dock on the opposite side) to Sargent, and apparently some outfitter used to keep canoes stashed over there for fishing clients...

Re: What interior lakes would you take in a packraft to fish on?

Since I'd originally posted this in January '19 I did end up buying an alpacaraft mule pack raft and I've been using it on the rivers near where I live. I'm still debating on how to get on the island for a quick fishing trip this spring. I'd like to fly direct from Houghton to Malone Bay and either...

Fungus may deter winter ticks on moose

From The Wolves and Moose of Isle Royale: Researchers at the University of Vermont have found a fungus that they believe could stop tick-bombs, large masses of ticks that attach and feed on moose. Ticks can be a major problem for the moose, they irritate their skin, which causes moose to scratch so ...
