Lynx on IR

From the IR Facebook page. Had not heard of a Lynx on IR in '80. We often think of moose and wolf as being Isle Royale’s constants. But historically the dominant large mammals were Canada lynx and woodland caribou. Evidence from archaeological records indicates that these two species were present on...

what does this have to do with isle royale?
A lot of folks who go to IR from MN stop in Grand Marais on the way up or on the way home. This is one of the places you looked forward to after eating "trail food". Eating at these places becomes a part of the trip. Part of the IR experience.

Re: Isle Royale Loons

How often have you heard a Loon call in the distance and thought " is that a wolf?" I have sat outside at Moskey, in the fall, at night listening to big numbers of Loons call. One starts and soon the others are calling. Great sound!!!

Isle Royale Loons

I have been looking into the Loon nesting status on IR. A survery was done in '02. There were 106 nesting pairs of Loons on IR. 63 nesting on inland lakes. 43 nesting On Superior waters. Amazing numbers given IR's size.

Re: Copper Harbor lodging

I second John's suggestions. There are also a couple of other similar accommodations but I have not tried them. There are also several B&B or other rentals in the area that typically require a 3 to 7 night minimum but can sometimes be had for one night when booked at the last minute. Even though I ...

Worlds Oldest Loon couple return to the UP

The oldest breeding pair of Loons has returned to Seeney National Wildlife Refuge to hopefully raise more young. Over the weekend our friends ...
