Re: Fishing advice for Beaver Island/ Rainbow Cove/ Rock of Ages area

I have not fished the areas you mentioned, other IR areas though. The fish will be deep. Look at hydro map/chart of the area. Troll the deeper areas and /or try vertical jigging. 4-6" white curlytail jig on at least a 1/2 oz jig. Obviously a fish finder is helpful. Might check with the NPS folks at ...

Re: Comet from IR

I viewed it last night from Michigan's north lower peninsula. Perfect viewing, crystal clear, dark sky. Very hard to see with the naked eye. It's nowhere as dramatic as some of the enhanced photos you see all over the place. Still, if you have a telescope or binoculars, it's worth seeing. We saw wh...

Re: Comet from IR

For folks going to IR, the comet can be seen in the evening sky after dark. It will be visible in the NW sky below the Big Dipper maybe a hands width above the horizon.

1936 Fire

This is from the IRNP Facebook page. Island Interrupted: Double Whammy When you’re knocked down, and then as you’re trying to get back up get knocked down by something even bigger, is it ever possible to get back to where you started? The 1930s were trying times for the balsam fir population on Isle...

Re: Pontoon boat

I’m thinking about taking a 25’ pontoon boat over from Grand Portage to Windigo. I plan on having a kicker onboard. I understand that the weather can change in an instant, but if I pick my day, I think it will be ok. Has anyone seen pontoon boats around the island? I have not. Do you have a good VH...

Sandhill Cranes nest in a few places on IR, could very well have been them. From the IR NPS page: Sandhill Cranes have become a somewhat common species in drained wetlands, and in recent years many breeding pairs have been found across the island.

Re: Water treatment

From the NPS Health page: It seems the NPS is advocating treating all water as if it has viruses. Use what ever treatment method makes you comfortable. I have never treated for and never worried about viruses in the backcountry in the US. Your backcountry outing may take you far away from running wa...
