Re: Inland fishing for backpackers?
I will preface this by saying I enjoy fishing, particularly IR. When kayaking, I have a few rods that I bring. If backpacking, my route always includes at least 1 lake to fish. you don't need a lot of equipment, I carry a 2 pc med light 6'6" spinning rod and a 2500 series spinning reel spooled ...

Re: Northern Pike Legal Limit 30" Max
I noticed in the Superintendent's Compendium (can't believe johnhens hasn't posted it yet  ) that the legal limit for Northerns on Inland Lakes is now a maximum of 30" with no minimum size. I thought with your new "leisure" time, you would be all over this (and I had not read t...

Re: Lightweight, compact binoculars
Binnoculars are like any Outdoors gear, you get what you pay for. Here is a good comparison of compact binnoculars which includes good info on what $$$ will get you. https://www.worldbirds.org/best-compact-binoculars/ I have a pair of Vortex (not compact) binnocs and a spotting scope. Vortex has a l...

Re: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste
I asked Tricia about teeth brushing, toothpaste ect. She is a Dental Hygienist. She said if one were to brush adequitely, water is all that is needed. Most people don't brush adequitely. Baking soda is a good product to use for brushing. Most people, when using toothpaste, use way to much. A little ...

Re: One word for Isle Royale National Park
I think there has been discussion about putting "tower or towers" At Ojibway and Ishpeming tower (not sure what would be needed to cover the park). I know there has been similar conversations at other parks (including Yellowstone). My concern is the person at the campground on their phone ...

Re: 2021 trail closures? cross-country camping permits?
Does anyone know when the NPS will post plans for summer 2021 rules? I specifically want to know if the full length of the Minong Ridge trail will be open, and whether hikers will be able to get cross-country zone camping permits. Both were not available last summer. At this point the Minong should...

Re: Isle Royale Loons
Moskey Basin is great. Tobin Harbor. Lane Cove. Daisy Farm dock. Depending on the time in summer, may not be calling as much as they tend their chicks.
Fall in Moskey is great as they gather there in large flocks for migration. They may keep you up all night with their calling.

Re: Father & Son Newbies
If your son is new to backpacking, get him out to hike with the pack he is using, with gear in it. Easier to make adjustments on the pack and gear at home. A lodge room at the end of the trip will be nice. Might want to bring a change of clothes that you can leave at the lodge (check with them when ...
