I decided to try Freezer Bag cooking on my trip back in August. This method required a bit of prep time before leaving for the trip, but some of the meals really paid off.
My favorite recipe was Thai Style Peanut Noodles from trailcooking.com:

Campsite maps
While doing research for my first trip to IR, I wasn't able to find any maps showing the layout and shelter/tent site counts. If you have any pictures of the camp site maps, feel free to post them here.
I forgot to take pictures of the maps until the end of my trip, so I only have Three Mile ...

Freezer Bag Cooking
Excerpted from my trip report .
For my recent trip to Isle Royale, I decided to make most of my own food and use the freezer bag cooking technique. Overall, I was pleased with the results. For recipes, I used:

Re: Camping with wolves
I had asked the ranger during our LNT talk whether to hang food or not. She said not to bother, but it seems like a good thing to do anyway.

Re: Isle Royale trip 2009
Great trip report, philranger.
Looks like we both filtered water from the exact same spot at WCB #6:

Re: August 26 - 30; Chippewa, McCargoe, Daisy, ThreeMile
Here is one of my favorite photos from my trip that I took with a friend on the Chippewa Harbor dock. It took a few tries to write the words backwards with a headlamp, but this one turned out pretty well.

August 26 - 30; Chippewa, McCargoe, Daisy, ThreeMile
My first trip to Isle Royale is dedicated to the memory of my Grandfather, Harry H. Johnson, Jr. (Grandpop). At an early age, he inspired in me a love of the outdoors through backpacking trips on the Appalachian Trail, camping trips in his 1960s-era canvas tent, and canoe trips through the New ...

Re: Aug 25th - Sept 5th
Great TR, Don.
Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet up on the trail, but it looks like we shared the 40 hours of rain on Aug 28/29.
I'll be posting my trip report in a few days once I get my pictures organized.

Re: trekking poles
On our recent trip, 2 of us had trekking poles and 2 did not. At the end, all four of us were convinced of their merit.
They certainly help with hiking inclines/declines, but they were most useful when we were hiking across slippery rock in the rain. The poles saved me more than once from landing on ...

Re: No Soap?
At our LNT orientation on Aug 26, the ranger told us the same thing--no soap of any kind, including bio-soap and camp suds.
We didn't use any, as requested, although it was pretty easy for me since I did freezer bag cooking for this trip.

Re: Loon or Merganser Ducks
Thanks, Kevin.
Yeah, they were fun to watch as they raced around near the dock. A lot of the time, they were going fast enough that only their feet were in the water as they skimmed the surface.
Were you scheduled to come back on Sunday or did you get delayed due to the weather? I'm glad we got out ...

Loon or Merganser Ducks
Just got back from the Island this past Sunday. Working on a trip report now, but one question for the group. We saw a bunch of these birds racing around on the water near Three Mile.
Are these loons or merganser ducks (or something else)?
