Re: Rock Harbor to Belle Isle

I utilized this site extensively for a trip last year and neglected to put up a retrospective of the trip. My apologizes. Here goes.

We did the trip you are thinking about. From RH we went around Blakes Point in mid-afternoon and it was very doable. Mind you, I have 1/100th the experience in a ...

Re: newbie questions about wetsuits

Thanks!
We do plan on being very careful around Blake Point, and have a very low threshold for using plan B, Portage from Hell (we are both youngish guys in decent shape).

Gonna hopefully camp at Merritt Lane that afternoon after getting off the Isle Queen, and 'stage' our approach to Blake's Point ...

newbie questions about wetsuits

Getting ready for my trip to IR this weekend. Doing a kayak trip around the NE part of the island.
Renting all our equipment we need. The outfitter is equipping me with a wet-suit. Had a basic question: what do you wear UNDER the wetsuit? Swim trunks? I have synthetic T-shirts for the top (I assume ...

Re: Kayak Pre-planning trip

Well, it was my friend's idea to circumnavigate the island, and I quickly shot it down. I agree, with our experience I think its more than a little foolhardy to attempt. I have to reiterate that we DO have kayaking experience, but dont have a lot of large lake experience by ourselves. This is why I ...

Re: Kayak Pre-planning trip

Well thats encouraging! Sounds like making our way to Merritt Lane that 1st day we land at RH and staying there overnight. I hear that the waters are usually more calm during the morning. From Merritt Lane the next morning we can decide if attempting to go around Blake Point is manageable, if so, we ...

Re: Campsites and Campfires

Thanks! Belle Isle sounds like a beauty of a campsite.

Now I just gotta hope the bugs and mosquitoes aren't horrendous that last week in July.....

Re: Kayak Pre-planning trip

Thanks for the advice.

We are going in the last week of July, so I hope the weather will be more 'predictable', well, at least more consistent.
I don't own a kayak; am renting from an outfitter in Copper Harbor.

Have decided to do a trip with less exposure. After talking with a ranger at RH ...

Campsites and Campfires

Buddy and I are tentatively planning a kayak trip around the NE side of IR in late July/early August. Going to take the Isle Queen to RH.
Then, either will portage to Duncan Bay or attempt a kayak around Blake Point (weather and Lake conditions permitting....I'm just assuming we will end up ...

Kayak Pre-planning trip

My buddy and I are tentatively planning a kayak trip to IR. It would be from 7/25/09 to about 8/1/2009. Initially he had thought about circumnavigating the island but I luckily talked him out of that. Now the plan is to do a 'partial' circumnavigation.
We both have some kayaking experience. We've ...
