GPS was good for us as we had a pretty good idea about how far we were from our destination...
I have the esbit stove but never used it..I wonder how much cooking one can get off of those solid fuel tabs...But when we hiked the minong 2 months ago, we had a dual fuel coleman and a woodstove...

Re: Hydration packs?
Your degree of dehydration depends on how fit you are. Both ends of the spectrum (fitnesswise) tend to sweat a lot. So in general you might not need a catheter on a 4-5 miles hike on a hot day. You also do not want to get dehydrated and more water isn't that bad as it will help with recuperation for ...

Re: waterproof boots
ok, gore-tex socks and leather boots soaked in mink oil...ok, didn't hear about these 2 options before...
Gore-tex offers a refund on their products if it leaks. I will contact them and see what kinda warranty they have or whey they leaked!
Where do u find mink oil anyway?

Re: waterproof boots
Don, I am pretty sure the boots had water from outside leaking in, not moisture. I know there are 3 possibilities to get feet damp: -moisture (gore-tex is working) -leakage from outside through the socks (gore-tex working) -leakage from outside strait to the boot (gore-tex not working) I am almost ...

waterproof boots
So we got back from IR about a week ago and we faced torrential rain on the last part of the minong. Our gore-tex boots didn't work as predicted even though they are fairly brand new. Any idea whether it is ever possible to have breathable hiking boots yet waterproof or is that too much asking?

Re: july 19th to July 26th (we actually came back the 25th)
finally got some time for the last part of our trip. So we spent the last 2 night in N. Desor for some well deserved rest. We also wanted to eat as much as possible to lighten our pack a bit. Which we did. Before going to sleep I consulted my "future telling Crystal ball" and it told me that ...

Re: july 19th to July 26th (we actually came back the 25th)
Thanks Don, good question as we were thinking about that. here we go: -We had too much food. Which would be fine on a 3/4 day camp but not 6/7 days. We had breakfast that needed cooking (pancakes, corned beef spam...) I'd make breakfast only coffee and nutella sandwiches or so. We brought lunches ...

Re: july 19th to July 26th (we actually came back the 25th)
Tanks folks. Swimming was certainly nice. I did swim last year in Lake Superior for the 1st time by 2 harbor north of Duluth. It was early July, it was 90 degrees, water looked so clear and clean...I jumped in. And it hit me. I thought this time the water will be warmer as it is the end of July. I ...

Re: july 19th to July 26th (we actually came back the 25th)
The Next day we woke up around 8, quick swim in the lake for me (10 seconds that is), we had a can of corned beef spam that we opened and we had it with pita bread and cheese, did drink our morning cappuccino, cleaned our cups and pans, packed and we left around 11.40am. We had awesome food all week ...

Re: july 19th to July 26th (we actually came back the 25th)
We are on our early 30s. We are relatively fit. Physically, on average and and in general we didn't have problems of stamina or fitness even though there were some long uphill hikes (we took a 30sec/1mn breather after those), but it was rough on the feet and maybe on a lesser degree on ankles. But ...

Re: weather and bugs
Did anyone wear any mosquito-proof clothing such as head nets, mosquito-net hoodies, etc? We did wear head nets. Our worst day hike was when it was raining from a mosquito strandpoint. Once we started hiking we didn't have the nets handy and we weren't sure where they were exactly, so it was our ...

Re: july 19th to July 26th (we actually came back the 25th)
Here we go, So our plan was to hike: -McCargoe to Todd Harbor (Monday 07/20) -Todd Harbor to Little Tod (07/21) -Little Todd to N. Desor (07/22) -N. Desor to somewhere 5 to 7 miles down the road and XC camp (you would need a permit for XC camping which is obtainable when asking the ranger at your ...
