Re: Queen Held Up on Isle Royale by Storms

Do we know if they made it back yet? I was part of the group that got stuck one extra day in August. My heart goes out to these poor folks. We all know IR is not the worst place to be stuck (it might be one of the best) but hanging around in one spot waiting for the weather to improve is not the mos...

Re: Favorite lightweight trail meals

My absolute favorite trail meal is tortellini with red sauce and ground beef. Pre-trip: 1. I dehydrate a jar of spaghetti sauce into a leather. I rip it up into roughly 1 inch square pieces. It weighs practically nothing. 2. Cook, drain, rinse in hot water, blot out fat with paper towel and dehydrat...

Re: Boater/backpacker relations

I can understand your concern based on experiences in other parks. I cannot speak for them as I have no knowledge of them, this is an Isle Royale forum. I can speak only of Isle Royale and the attemps to create a sense of conflict between different user groups. Thankfully that was some time ago and...

Re: Hydration packs?

I have used one for years. I like that I don't have to stop to mess with a drinking bottle to drink. I run the hose of the water bladder so that it hangs over my shoulder. As I'm walking I can take a sip whenever. I don't ever drink a lot of water at once so its nice for me to keep sipping as I go. ...

Re: any recent bug reports?

There are a couple of reports under the weather and bugs thread. Doh! That's where I meant to post this, sorry. Any admins want to move this thread? Sorry about that. Anyway, it seemed there was only one recent bug report there so I was wondering if anyone else has been on IR lately and coul...

any recent bug reports?

I leave for IR in two weeks and I am trying to decide if I should spend the money on a bug shirt or not (http://www.bugshirt.com/). I don't do well with mosquitoes. I know I'd rather be safe than sorry but last time I was on IR bugs were not an issue. Of course I think we went in September that year...

Re: shelter vs. tent sites

IR is the only place I've ever camped that has shelters. I don't count on getting one but if it's available I'll take it, especially if bugs or weather are bad.

Re: weather and bugs

IR Mosquitoes can bite through rain jackets?!!!!!   Say it isn't so!!! I hope some of those little suckers die off before I hit the trail in three weeks. I was hoping by mid August they wouldn't be so bad. Now I am worried. I am pretty allergic to the little suckers and w...

Re: Hanging food at campsites?

What about hard plastic tupperware type containers with tight fitting lids as opposed to stuff sack bags or put inside stuff sack bags for hanging. They don't add much weight but do add piece of mind. I've used these anywhere I camp without bears and haven't had any issues yet. Has anyone used this ...

Possible interary

So this is what I'm tentatively thinking we might do. Any input on how difficult or easy this is would be much appreciated. I am particularly interested in what the trail is like between Lake Richie and Chippewa and then Chippewa to Moskey. Thanks all! Sun Aug 15th - arrive at RH via the Queen Sun -...

Re: Huge Blisters 6 days before going to Isle Royale

Cheapest solution, duct tape your feet. I wish I would duct taped my feet more. Everyspot I did not duct tape I got nasty blisters about 1.5 inches long on two of them and almost 4 weeks later still are healing. Those bandiad things work great but for a cheaper solution you can't go wrong with duct...

Re: Huge Blisters 6 days before going to Isle Royale

BandAid Blister Block Cushions. I have narrow heals and tend to get blisters on my heals. These things work wonders. They are worth every penny and then some of the buck a piece they cost. I stopped using mole skins once I found these. If you don't already have blisters this prevents them (if you kn...

Food thread?

I am new here and have failed to find a thread regarding backcountry meals despite the tons of other useful info here. My hiking partner and I are always thinking of new recipes and ways to make our backcountry cuisine not so blah. I have tons of recipes to share but would like to see others meal id...
