Re: Windigo Supplies for Gas
I called to reserve the fuel but the woman said they don't reserve fuel for backpackers and it isn't necessary since they have "a years" supply. She said they carry both the 4 and 8oz cans.

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
Just a quick update, the fight schedule I wanted was not available. Originally I had thought to take a Noon flight to Windigo and then the 5pm flight out. The only options I have with them are the 2pm flight to Windigo and the 3pm flight back to houghton. This makes my itinerary very tight. I would ...

Re: Windigo Supplies for Gas
Thanks Dave and Ingo - I have a pocket rocket too, so good to hear there are some options. I contacted them through the link Ingo posted and this was their response: =-=-=-=-= Thank you for your inquiry. We do have MSR IsoPro Fuel at the Windigo store. Please phone us at 906-337-4993 to reserve and ...

Windigo Supplies for Gas
Anyone know what gas is stocked at Windigo? I'm taking the plane over and was curious if they normally had MSR isoPro in stock.

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
Thanks Kevin and John. Yeah it does seem to be a bit risky doing that last leg. The last flight is at 5pm, so if I don't make that I'm stuck. I'd be staying the last night at Desor North, so the 12 miles would have to be done by 5pm (I'd want to plan be there by 3:30/4 to be safe). I'm glad to hear ...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
I'm reading the Isle Royale book by Jim DuFresne, and he says this is the hardest leg of the Minong, so perhaps it is good to have a short leg here.WalkingCrow wrote:I'd have the most "free time" at Lake Desor North, so I am hoping that would give me time gear up for the last leg out to Windigo.

I am hoping to take the seaplane round trip (if they can accommodate me).johnhens wrote:Are you taking the seaplane or the Voyager? How are you getting off at the end of your trip?

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
Okay it looks like I will have 5 nights available to spend on the island. And if I plan to arrive mid day and leave late in the day on that 7th day, would this itinerary be to ambitious? I figure I would be hitting the trail from Windigo at Noon, and returning in time for the latest flight out at ...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
The trail is well defined and marked on the TI/NG Map. It is an easy hike, you would have no problems coming back in the dark with a light!!! That is good to hear, thanks! Bigger question, how well marked are the trails of IR? I just came from hiking the high peaks of the Adirondacks and I found ...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
If I had 4-5 nights, I would definitely do the Minong, from McCargo Cove to Windigo. I would also consider a side trip to Huginnin Cove, if there is time. This trip would have everything you are looking for. Except for the last leg, the mileage isn't very high, and the campgrounds are stellar ...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
You are allowed to have a fire there, and many of the other campsites you are not. Is that worth it to you? Good question. I guess for me I am more apt to enjoy a nice fire if I have something to look upon. If it is just a fire in trees, I might not bother, but if there is a view to be enjoyed ...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
On my first trip to Isle Royale, I did the Windigo to Rock Harbor trip in 4 nights. I stayed at South Desor, Hatchet Lake, West Chickenbone, and Daisy Farm. I got up very early on the last day and got to Rock Harbor around 9AM and left on the seaplane around 11. On my most recent trip to the island ...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
Welcome to the forums, WalkingCrow! Thanks! I am really excited to join in with the experience. My next recommendation would be doing the Indian Portage trail and splitting that up however you'd like, as long as you get to do West Chickenbone and Chippewa Harbor. Two more incredible places on the ...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
the first three miles is flat and boring, so it is nice to get that out of the way. Then the rest of the way has great views. Also, when you do the last section down to the campground, you will really appreciate not having to make the climb out of Feldman to the ridge. Hi Nick, I was looking at ...
