Re: Alone at Malone

When I got to Malone many, many years ago there were many kids and parents there. That was the only place I was able to call Ohio, Ky, and Minnesota with a regular cell phone (at the NP) . The hike down from Greenstone was a challenge. The trail down was overgrown and in some places above my head. I...

Re: Trip Report: Aug 6-13, 2020

Thanks for the video! Envy you guys. I thought after last years hike (at ISRO), I'd retire from backpacking. The rangers were checking up on me every where I went (sore L. knee and R. ankle). Thanks to them I made it back to Rock Harbor. Now I don't know where I'd go, if there is a next year. Every ...

Re: 2021 Trip Advice: Minong Ridge, to Daisy Farm

If you want a challenge, IncaRoads' route, McCargoe to Windigo is worth a try. The hike from N. Desor to Wash. Crk is long. I got my shoes/boots wet on the last leg of the hike. Wish I could do it again (I'm probably too old to do it again).

A nice article. A friend from NYC sent this to me last night. I give her reports of my trips after each trip. Wish all of us were there right now.

Re: Water treatment

Interesting, the rangers only worried that this old man had trouble hiking on the east end last year. They all seemed to know about me. Never heard about norovirus from them.

Re: Good article about dragonflies and mercury

Dragonflies can take care of themselves (sometimes). Years ago, I was heading north on the Gunflint trail when one came into my car and hit me on the forehead. It decided to bite me and my head had one heck of a bump for several days. I still respect them, as a part of our kingdom.

Re: Haunted Hikes

Years ago, I spent a night alone with the barking wolves at Hatchet. The night before they ran thru that campground (in the middle of the night). No negative dream, lucky me.

Re: Rock Harbor campground - does it fill up / campers turned away?

I arrived on the Ranger late last June. There were numerous tent sites available after 3pm. You should be in good shape arriving earlier then that.

Re: from McCargoe Cove

When I hiked down to Malone Bay, the grass and plant life in spots had grown above my shoulder (sometimes head). Be careful, but I would love to do that hike again (someday).
