Departing for Houghton in 3 hours.
Packed and ready to go. We're around 65lbs total (dry and without fuel) between the two of us with 24 lbs of food or so. Heavier than I'd like for this sort of terrain, but what can you do? We should be cruising the last few days when we've knocked the food down ...

The Perseid Meteor Shower Is Coming - peaking 8/11-8/12
I'll have my eyes peeled =) Look to the northeast.

Mainland shower/cleanup facilities...
After spending 8 days on the island, I imagine I'll need to clean up a bit before perusing the eateries in the Houghton area and the 9 hour drive home. $6 for a 5 minute shower on the island is going to cut it.

Ok, re: stove fuel =)
I am an engineer (BS Biosystems Engineering, MSU) so I really ought to know better (and do). So I think this just goes to show how a little paranoia (broken stove = cold, crunchy dinners for 7 nights) + the gear manufacturers' marketing machine = a lapse in good sense.

Re: First IR trip - 8d/7n - Greenstone here we come!
Thanks for the input on Lookout Louise. Given that we have deep options and are already over budget, we are probably just going to see how fate smiles on us when we arrive. If we can get transportation over to hidden lake, great! Otherwise we'll hoof it to Lane Cove, great! Or we'll stay a night in ...

Shelter locations - table?
All of the hiking I have done has involved pitching a tent every night, so these shelters sound like premium luxury to me.
It won't affect my trip at all, but I am wondering if there is a table of campsites and the number of shelters available.
Then again, it might be better to not know and just ...

Re: Six Nights in August
Plans have changed a little.
Thursday: McCargo to Lane Cove
This is the only part I have a comment on: it's a long, hot trek. Be prepared!
I second that but still doable. One thing to remember is there's no water between chickenbone and lane cove so if it's hot, you might run out. I did this ...

Re: Jetboil stove + seaplane transport = no fuel -- Solution?
Bought a can of Primus 4-season fuel and it seemed to work fine with the Jetboil. Maybe a little slower, but that could just be perception.
I guess I just will have to buy a bit more than I had planned on.
Did anyone else have any experience with this?

Re: First IR trip - 8d/7n - Greenstone here we come!
Yes, option 2 is much better. Option 1 is more of a crappy weather, trashed feet option.
Right now I can't catch the water taxi to Hidden Lake the day I arrive. I'd have to wait until 8:30AM the next day which burns a night.

First IR trip - 8d/7n - Greenstone here we come!
Again, what an awesome site. I wish I had found it sooner.
My fiance and me have hiked a lot of the UP, but this is our first trip to IR. It is also our longest trip together. 7 nights will be the most for me by a couple of nights, but it's 4 more than she has done before. We've hiked this mileage ...

Re: Jetboil stove + seaplane transport = no fuel -- Solution?
OK. The Jetboil is an isobutane stove. Right? What is the difference between the Jetboil canister and the Primus isobutane canister they sell at RH?
DOH! I'm thinking that was a rhetorical question, no? (a good one though!) There's no difference. Right? =)
Man, I'm not sure why I brain-blocked ...

Jetboil stove + seaplane transport = no fuel -- Solution?
Hello all,
Awesome forum, can't wait to dig around more.
I'm taking my first trip to IR 8/15-8/22. I plan on taking my battle hardened Jetboil with me. There is no fuel sold on the island and it is prohibited on the plane.
How do I solve this conundrum? Can I arrange for a shipment of fuel via ...
