Re: DEET and your sleeping bag
You can also use a sleeping bag liner but I would also assume you are giving yourself a nice sponge bath with some hot water at camp before crawling in your bag to sleep.

Re: Solo UL tent suggestion
Could also do a backpacking hammock. Some of those are very lite and if you are camping in summer you could do away with your padding.

Re: Sleeping Bag
Yeah I got a Big Agnes with one of their inflatable air mattress. Its nice for sleeping on the ground but I use a hammock so I kinda slip off of it as I roll around. Thinking of getting a thinner thermrest type one and I like the idea of a camp chair.

Re: Sleeping Bag
You can also sleep in long underwear, use some foot booties, hot water bottles, etc in case you hit one of those cold, raining IR trips like my wife and I's last one.
What type of padding are you planning to use? Cold spots, even in a warm bag, will keep you awake.

...you must have a water filter, as purification pills won't kill the tapeworm. One can always just boil water. My old school memories remind me of the days before water filters. Plus all the extra fuel needed and the boliing time recommendation back then was longer. Before we got our ...

Re: Coffee making, best methods
My wife bought me the GSI Outdoors® Java Press 30 oz french press. I already have a GSI cup that fits snug inside so looks like I have my coffee fixation taken care of

Re: Fire rings and fire wood.
If you like to camp with a little bit of fire at your campsite you could consider a wood burning stove. These are not your typical hobo tin can deals but twig burners that either have battery fans or other methods to create a vortex of air that creates a very small, very hot fire. I remember someone ...

Re: Backpacking Hammocks
I love my Hennessey and have used it alot when we thru hiked the Superior Trail. In bad weather I used to get a little water at the ends so I started carrying a nylon tarp to expand my coverage area but it adds to my weight but it was great to cook and sit under when we were in the back country in ...

Re: Backpacking Hammocks
I use a sleeping pad (instead of an underquilt)--because the pad is more versatile and can be used in the hanging hammock, on the wood floor of a shelter or when I pitch the hammock like a small tent or "bivy". I carry a Tyvek ground cloth to place under my sleeping pad in shelters or under the ...

Re: IR in Fall?
My wife and I did early Sept. last year and we are doing the same this year. It was a bit rainy while there and since its cooler, the rain can make the dampness down right bone chilling. Like the others said, be prepared for the cold and ensure your personally and equipment wet weather gear is in ...

Re: Inexpensive and Good Gear??
You can also either make your own backpacking hammock and pick up a tarp and bug next for it or you could buy the Speers kit with everything you need for a little over $100.

Re: Backpacking Hammocks
I forgot to report back on this thread about my hammocking at IR. My wife and I have now been using our ENO DoubleNest hammocks and bug nets for about 4 hiking trips and love them. Unless we were going someplace that does not have trees I don't think we would ever go back to tent camping and ...

Re: Better late than never??
Ha, my wife and I had rain, cold, grey skies, and the only wildlife we saw was a camp squirrel. Oh well, maybe next time. Thank you for the great trip report. Will have to look for the lounge at the cove when we go.

Re: IR Trip Report for Sept. 2010 - Windigo Loop
Ha, I got to laugh at some of the comments because my wife is a woman of contrasts. She goes backpacking with me in the cold, rain, heat, bugs, dirt, etc but when we are not camping and on vacation she is very picky. We are planning a trip to NYC and she is planning on stay at the Waldorf. Got a few ...

Re: Affordable Lightweight Tent?
You can always go down the path of evil like me and do hammock camping  . Finding good hanging trees the correct distance apart can be a chore on IR but you always sleep comfortably. If you get a dispersed camping permit then you can pitch you hammock almost anywhere (certain distances away ...
