Re: IRNP recommends filtering AND chemical treatment?!
At orientation, NPS specifically pointed out that the SteriPen is not effective against tapeworms, and did not suggest using Pens on the island at all.

Re: bugs, late August/September
I was on the island from 8/21-8/26. Did RH to Daisy, then the Minong from Windi to McCargo. Mozzies were there in very small numbers in the shade areas between ups; one of the "inbetweens" had a bunch of "bee-like" bugs all over the place on the yellow flowers, but never stung us or bothered us ...

Re: Windigo Store
We were in Windigo on 8/22. The store was still trying to recover from the resupply delays caused by bad weather the week previous; only serving P B and J sandwiches (which it more than fine with me). However, IMHO they still had plenty of food, albeit not all of it was trail food. Overall, I was ...

Re: Water filter recommendation?
The algae blooms are clogging filters at Lake Ritchie, and perhaps Chickenbone as well. Folks we talked to at McCargo on 8/25 said that their filter volume dropped off and became harder to pump after using it at Chickenbone.

We had calm seas both ways: 8/21 and 8/26. Thanks again Captains!

Looks like Walzs, DP89 and myself will be on the island at the same time.
Be safe!

Re: Shelter Graffiti
I'm torn between the appreciation of the artwork and the "devaluing" of the IR experience. Some of the stuff looks like public bathroom stuff, but a few really are creative. I just wish that the art would be located somewhere else outside of the shelter.

Re: Motion Sickness Remedies
Couple of years ago the trip over was a little dicey. All was well in the Copper Harbor, but once we cleared the break wall, one big wave set everybody back inside the boat. The waves were pretty decent and a bunch of people got sick through the whole trip inside and out. The crew really had their ...

Re: 1st Timer to Isle Royale
FWIW -- I concur with Keweenaw and Jerry. I'll add that all three of your itineraries look good and completely doable. The toughest thing for you will be picking one of the three routes.

Re: 1ST trip plan, your 2 cents
I haven't been to all of the campsites on the island, but so far, Moskey is my favorite place.
I would also suggest you fill in your "no plans" part of your itinerary with some of the great sites and things to do around RH. Canoeing/tooling around would be a really cool way of appreciating the ...

I don't have an online copy of it, but there is a really creative picture in one of the shelters at McCargo Cove. It's in red and I think black/blue ink.

Yes, West Chickenbone is the place you want to be. East is nice for a visit. West gets packed pretty quick, even in slower times; it's pretty popular.

Great report! Me and my hiking buddy are hiking Windigo to Rock Harbor via the Minong and are definitely looking forward to it.
