Re: September weather
Cooler days in the 60's make for great hiking weather, but it also could be much warmer. Nights can be a bit cold at times. The thing I notice most is the decreasing lack of daylight; sunrise 7:30 am and sunset 8:15 pm, Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Link to summary of September 2017 weather on Isle...

Re: Seaplane question!!
The seaplane pilot loads/unloads your gear just like a cabbie, so I would imagine that a tip would be appreciated.

Re: Boat options from Grand Portage to Rock Harbor
Not aware of any private boat charters in the Grand Portage MN area. You may want to consider travel from the Michigan side as the travel times to Rock Harbor are shorter. The Ranger III out of Houghton MI is the largest boat and typically provides the smoothest ride. Link to NPS website on transpor...

Re: Ranger question (and bonus pasty query)
From the FAQ section on the NPS Isle Royale web site... What is the scheduled time of departure from Houghton, Michigan? The Ranger III departs Houghton for Isle Royale at 9:00 am EDT, Tuesday and Friday through the passenger season. Passengers are asked to arrive by 8:00 am EDT; Canoes/kayaks shoul...

Re: Feldtmann Loop vs Minong
I have done off-trail backcountry camping in the two locations you are inquiring about. In Sept. 2017, I hiked the western portion of the Minong Ridge Trail for the second time, going from west to east and onward to Malone Bay. After leaving Huginnin Cove, I planned to off-trail camp somewhere near ...

Re: Feldtman loop mid May
Ingo, the bridge in question was at Siskiwit Lake and not over the Big Siskiwit River. Sorry for the confusion. See corrected post above.

Re: Food dehydrator recommendations?
I have an Excalibur 5-tray model. I especially like the timer feature as I can set it late at night and it will turn itself off when done.

Re: Feldtman loop mid May
A Feldtmann loop mid-May trek would be nice as the vegetation has not had a chance to impinge upon the trail. I had similar problems with beavers creating high water conditions while going out to Malone Bay in September 2017. The bridge at the west end of Lake Siskiwit was not passable. One side of ...

Re: I need general advice on trails, weather, etc.
MH meals are fine. You may also want some additional high caloric items like dried fruit, nuts, jerky, hard cheese, and chocolate to supplement your dinner and other meals. Read through the "Food & Cooking" subform for some other ideas. Here are a couple of links to get you started... Link ---> http...

Itinerary Advice for cadenparulski
This is my first time going a big solo backpacking trip like this- I have adequate hiking and camping experience and I am in pretty good shape, but I would still like some feedback on my planned itinerary. It's not really one I've seen in any of the research that I've done. I plan on taking the Isl...

Re: More on Algae blooms
I contacted the lead researcher on this study and inquired about which lakes were being monitored. Here is his response... Thanks for your interest in our work. This appearance of cyanobacterial blooms on ISRO is a real puzzle for us. Our monitoring work is targeting 8 lakes that capture the gradien...
