Re: TR: 6/2 - 6/7 2019 [Ishpeming Trail > Greenstone Trail > Windigo]

Did the NPS people at Windigo give anything away about whether there were plans to work on the deadfall or restore the beaver-ravaged boardwalk? In September of 2017 that same bridge/boardwalk (at the west end of Lake Siskiwit) was not passable. One side of it was floating as it was not attached to...

Re: Feeble First-Timer, Seeking Affirmation

The concession operation at Rock Harbor and Windigo do offer a service to store gear for a fee. The box of gear cannot contain stove fuel or food.

Re: Minong Trail Conditions

Why not ask the Rangers when you arrive on Saturday and make your decision then? The Minong Ridge Trail from Windigo to Little Todd encompasses some of the toughest trails on Isle Royale. Beaver dams, mud, slippery rocks, endless up and downs, and possible early season deadfalls await you. I typical...

Re: Newbie Weekend Trip Input

2. Doing a loop to and from the Windigo Dock though we may be time-limited on that. For a weekend trip (2 nights), doing the Feldtmann Loop is a bit too long on distances. 3. Chilling around Malone Bay after being dropped of by the ferry as that seems popular and beautiful and doing day hiking. Mal...

Re: This or That? Which Itinerary for Windigo to Rock Harbor

...Our first itinerary would have us arriving in Rock Harbor early in the day before our ferry. The second itinerary would have us arriving much later that day before... Understood. If I remember correctly, the National Park Service states that the busiest times at Isle Royale are in July/August. A...

I usually plan 1/2 mile/hr bushwhacking, so 1 mile per hour sounds like easy going. :)
1/2 miles/hour in thick woods with water hazards may be a better approximation!

Since I travel solo like yourself, I leave a note in my tent/shelter indicating the approximate route I plan to take.

Re: Bushwhacking Moskey to Mt. Saginaw

Is the shoreline walkable around the end of the harbor? In early season, a lot of the lower land like that at the end of Moskey Basin is quite saturated. The shoreline is un-walkable as the swampy lowlands extend right up to the big lake. I've had plenty of times where you take a step on the mud an...

It's never too late to submit a trip synopsis. Great report!

... not sure if I’ll be able to get back to IRNP this year. But it remains my favorite park so far, and even though it’s been 6 months I think about this trip and that park often.

Re: Family trip planning

Not really familiar with black flies. Are they like house flies that are attracted to fecal matter? Do they bite or are just annoying? No. Black flies are small (up to 1/8 inch long) and are also known as buffalo gnats since they have a humpback appearance. Black flies hatch from cool, clean rivers...

Re: Floorless Tarp Tent on Minong Bad Idea?

You should be fine with that shelter setup. Most of the tent sites at the campgrounds are reasonably well drained, though some are better than others. Much of the Minong is dry ridge walking, interspersed by a multitude of fault lines. At each fault line, you are forced down off the ridge and a retu...

Re: September weather

Cooler days in the 60's make for great hiking weather, but it also could be much warmer. Nights can be a bit cold at times. The thing I notice most is the decreasing lack of daylight; sunrise 7:30 am and sunset 8:15 pm, Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Link to summary of September 2017 weather on Isle...
