Re: No IR but I did make it to the UP and the Keweenaw this
I first saw Isle Royale from Brockway Mountain as a kid on our family's trips to Eagle Harbor. I wanted to go and made it to IR as an adult about a dozen times, but I can't count the number of times I've been to the Keweenaw. I love IR, but my heart belongs to the Keweenaw. Sounds like you found a ...

Re: What are your winter plans?
I'm planning on going on my first cross-country ski or snow-shoe backpacking trip in the Keeweenaw. I've been to Keweenaw twice since last September and have another trip planned next month. I've gone winter camping there a couple of times in the past but these last trips and the one I have planned ...

Another option that no one has mentioned is to come into Rock Harbor from Houghton or Copper Harbor. That cuts four hours off your drive time from Chicago versus Grand Portage. Paddle to Tookers or Caribou canoe campsites. Then portage into Lake Ritchie (fairly easy 2 mile trail that you'd share ...

Re: Breakfast ideas
Mountain House Eggs and Bacon are my favorite. I don't care for their Eggs and Ham at all, though. I like their newer Breakfast Skillet but it's one of their few meals for one or two that I can't finish by myself. I like oatmeal, but it just doesn't last long enough for me on the trail - it's almost ...

Re: Instant mashed potatoes
What brand or model does everyone use for a food dehydrator? I had to go look, Fonix. I have a Concorde Electric "Au Naturel" model which is older than the hills. I got it at Goodwill, believe it or not. Very basic, no fan, fragile plastic trays, adjustable vents top and bottom. It's like one I ...

I bought a big bottle from Sawyer to treat clothing. It strongly cautions against contact of the wet solution with skin. Not sure if they'd make a lotion from it. I've been impressed with its effectiveness, though. Risks - read and decide yourself. I'm cautious even though I do wear the treated ...

Re: Typical pack weight
One of the boys had a two-burner Coleman stove tied so that it swung below his pack frame. Every time he took a step the stove swung and whacked him on the back of the leg. Thump, thump, thump. Don, one time disembarking at Rock Harbor with me were two young women (former Girl Scouts, I think they ...

Re: DEET and your sleeping bag
As far as I've seen, DEET damages nylon right away. Washing the bag at the end of the trip doesn't help too much, the damage is done.
The part of me that gets the most DEET is my hands. I wash them before I eat which is before I go to bed.

Re: What camera should I bring?
I agree with Ingo about figuring out what you want from the pictures you take. My first trips to IR I took an SLR and 2 lenses, 28mm & 105mm and 15 rolls of film - shot about 10 each time. The 105 stayed on the camera so I was ready for a chance wildlife shot, but I figured the 28 was more for ...

Re: Thermarest Neo Air?
We bought two of the short NeoAirs two years ago to keep our weight down. We didn't inflate them all the way and they were comfortable even for me when I slept on my side. We were both cold, though, when the temperatures dropped to the mid 30s when sleeping on the wood floor of shelters. We ended up ...

Re: 2012 early trip itinerary thoughts?
An alternative to an expensive water taxi trip to Chippewa Harbor is to coordinate your arrival with the schedule of the Voyager II which circumnavigates the island. It leaves Rock Harbor every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 8 and arrives at CH at 9 . I think you need to make a reservation to be ...

Re: BRING CASH! New User Fee Collection Procedure
On my last trip 2 years ago, the Queen only collected daily fees. If you wanted the annual pass, you had to buy it at the Rock Harbor Visitors Center when you registered to camp.
