Re: Sylvania Wilderness

I did a Slyvania canoe camp fishing trip about 4 years ago. it was a great trip and the small mouth action is awesome. Ditto on the above post, very beautiful area.

Re: Brockway Mountain

Those squiggly lines in the middle of the basin indicate the failed Keweenaw Rift zone of about a billion years ago. That's also the reason there is a ton of copper/ Agates / other cool gems stones found in the Keweenaw (and Isle Royale). Concur on Brockway Mtn being a good detour. Graduated from Da...

Re: Porkies Trip Early May

Was that storm fairly localized, at least for ice? I saw pictures of snow farther north in the Keweenaw. Anyone know how far north this ice event went?

Re: ULA Equipment Backpacks

I have a Catalyst and love it. Its about ten years old. Been to the Porkies, NCT, Mt Rainier, Olympic National Park, Washington Coast. And countless day hikes. My number 2 son also has one and used it on about a thousand miles of the PCT, he loves it. My number 3 son has a Gregory Altoro (I think) b...

Re: Unmapped Mines

Next to no chance it could happen. I spent my college days in Houghton at Da tech. Every free minute I had I was trompsing in the woods, usually looking for old mine tailing to satisfy a life long interest in rock hounding. Including a lot of time on snow with snowshoes on. (That was usually rabbit ...

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2017 Edition

REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus Tent, I think

I also need a new headlamp and maybe a DeLorme Missouri Atlas and Gazetteer, since I am living in St Louis now.

Lots of possibilities :)

Re: Old Trails

Very cool effort. Ill be watching the thread closely.

I probably wont get to the Island again until 2018, but if this is ongoing, Ill look to search for one of these trails. My 21 yr old would love it. (He usually goes with me on treks.........)

Re: Huron Mountains

But the real gem of the U.P. for bushwack camping is the Keweenaw. It is mostly private land as well but the whole mindset of the locals allows for careful and quiet use. There are numerous places you can hike through or into and then camp along Lake Superior while never bumping into another person...

Re: Huron Mountains

........I must have been on every two track west of the property. No dice, everything was blocked by very stout concrete pylons with very heavy chains and locks blocking the roads. Some guys I worked with bushwhacked onto their property probably 30 years ago. Both were skilled orienteers. If I reme...

Huron Mountains

............I imagine the Huron Mountains would be a glorious destination if it was public land instead of a private reserve! I was there back in 1978. Perhaps the most dramatic scenery in the State of Michigan. Rugged landscape with shear rock cliffs. Lots of old-growth timber too. Sadly, I was on...

I currently live in the Seattle metro area and heard this on the radio this morning.

The first thought I had was I wish they would just transplant that pack to Isle Royale...........

Re: Hiking suggestions in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan

I am seriously looking into the Manistee River Trail. Are there any restrictions on camping along the NCT section? I'd like to break that stretch up. Also, there does not look like there is any reasonable access to water along the NCT section. It would be nice to get water but with a little plannin...
