Re: Is using a folding hand cart on the trail practical?

Welcome to the forums, Haisen. Even if the cart was allowed it would very impractical on the Isle Royale trails due their extremely bumpy and irregular surface. If your inquiry was based upon need instead of inconvenience then I suggest you look into other options. There are several campgrounds on L...

. . . . but an astronomer with NPS is leaning toward the Starlink Network but is researching so hopefully he can figure out exactly what I captured.
Wait! What? The NPS employs an astronomer?

Damn dams! Sorry I just couldn't resist the opportunity.

Terrible for the moose but saved some trees though.

Beautiful. What's the source of the orange glow on the horizon below Jupiter?

Re: Chief54 Prelim Report

Seems to sort of fly in the face of the edicts of the Wilderness Act (and Biosphere adherence), but I think the wolf reintroduction already crossed that rubric. Actually I'm in favor of the trail crew's (most likely temporary) action so I guess I'm just making somewhat of a rhetorical point.

Re: Chief54 Prelim Report

I'm confused. It looks and sounds like the beaver dam was being altered? Really?

Re: Chief54 Prelim Report

I'm glad to hear you had so many clear night skies. I was watching the NOAA hourly forecasts while you on the Island and their published odds for clear night skies did not look so good. I'm not surprised they got it wrong. It's some of the hardest weather to predict. I await further published results.

Re: Daisy Farm concrete foundations

I agree with treeplanter that most likely origin is the CCC camp. They were considered temporary then but they became quite large (in Island speak anyway). Here are 2 pictures of the Daisy Farm CCC Camp taken in 1938 and 1939: Daisy Farm 1939 NVIC-30-205.jpg Daisy Farm 1938 NVIC-30-131.jpg From what...

Eloquent as ever. Thank you. I must ask though, is photo #6 the selfie you mentioned? I might proffer that those 4 foot high beaver cuts were obtained via some sort of pyramid of two or more beavers working in consort.

Re: Picnic Tables in Group Sites?

After searching my memory and older forum posts, I can assure you that any campground located on Lake Superior that also has a dock will also have picnic tables, even at the group sites. All inland campgrounds have no picnic tables. Also, Tom's warning that picnic tables can sometimes "walk away" is...

Re: RH Lodge Fishing Charter

I have not used the Rock Harbor charter fishing but I have used one located in the Keweenaw. If you're into fishing (or even not) it's a lot of fun. Catching Lake Trout reliably requires specific equipment, tackle and skills. I've compared prices in Michigan and Minnesota. The Lodge's pricing is qui...

I've been lobbying the Park to add a webcam to Snug Harbor or maybe move the one at Tobin Harbor. The Tobin Harbor camera has never been very reliable.

Re: Zebra Mussels and fishing gear

a dunk in very low concentration of propylene glycol antifreeze does wonders. I wonder if they caught any fish after that? My question is mostly tongue in cheek but I know Lake Trout fishermen that don't even like to touch their lures and swear it makes a difference. Probably not Northern so much. ...

Re: Zebra Mussels and fishing gear

Zebra Mussels have been in Lake Superior for about 30 years now, found mainly in the bigger commercial shipping port areas of Duluth/Superior and Thunder Bay. I think they were first seen on Isle Royale about 10 years ago. Here's a more dramatic and more recent report singling out both the Windigo d...
